New Knox United choir director performs
PEOPLE AROUND
BE LGRAVE
By Linda

Call

On Friday, Nov. 11 there were
three tables of shoot in play at the
Belgrave Community Centre. The
winners were: high pink card,
Louise Hammond and high white
card, Judy Hahn.
The next card party is on Friday,
Nov. 25 at 1:30 p.m. Everyone is
welcome.
Doris, Kendra, Abby and Preston
Robinson greeted worshippers and
handed out the bulletins at Knox
United Church on Sunday, Nov. 13.
Brian Hymers welcomed
everyone. Brian lit the Christ candle
and the call to worship was read
responsively. The opening hymn,
"Come Now, Almighty King" was
followed by the gathering prayer.
The congregation sang the children's
hymn, "Jesus, Friend of Little
Children" which was accompanied
by Mackenzie Wightman at the
piano.

Community Centre on Nov. 12. Sylvia Nonkes, left, is one of the volunteers keeping the great

The children gathered in the front
pew for story time. Brian showed the
children a teddy bear that had been
passed down from each person in
someone's family and because she
was the youngest of 10 it was hers.
Over the years it endured a lot of
wear and tear and had to be
preserved from destruction. The bear
had been given more love than you
can imagine. We are like the teddy
bear to God. God loves us all the
time. When we pass away we go to
heaven and we are brought back to
our original self. We all will be
resurrected when we go to heaven.
After the Lord's Prayer, the children
adjourned to Sunday school. The
congregation listened to the Word of
God as Doreen Marks read scripture
from Isaiah 65: 17-25, responsive
reading from Isaiah 12 and Luke 21:
5-19.
The new organist and choir
director Kae MacKendrie sang, "If
You Don't Give Up on Miracles"
composed by her and accompanied
at the piano.
Brian reflected on today being
Salvation Sunday. Jesus talks about
everything that could happen to us.
The world is constantly changing.
With each newness comes a passion.
Jesus gives us a gift of salvation. The
glory of salvation awaits us all. With
joy we draw the water of our
salvation. God allows us eternity. All
is not lost in the state of death.

A good night out
The Huron -Perth District Women's Institute recently held
its ladies night in Listowel which featured presentations
from several inspirational women. Shown enjoying the
night are, from left: Linda Stewart, Ria Stewart and Nancy

The Huron Perth District
Women's Institute held its annual
ladies night out event at the Listowel
Agricultural Hall on Nov. 3. The
theme was "Colourful Inspirations"
and it featured a delicious roast beef
dinner, followed by three awesome
guest speakers to entertain and
educate. There were 125 guests from
more than 12 different WI branches
in Huron Perth and Wellington
Counties.
Steve Stacey, Director of
Fundraising and Communications
for the Local Community Food
Centre in Stratford, spoke first. The
Centre is a progressive charity
where the power of healthy, local
food is harnessed to empower low
income members, promote health,
advance social justice and break
down barriers. He stressed that
many people don't understand that
their neighbours are going without
food or going without something
else. It's not necessarily the person
living on the street. It's also people
living in homes and driving cars
who don't have enough money to
put food on the table. Executive
Director Debra Swan assisted him
with an informative power point
presentation showing "The Locals"
food distribution centre, with a focus
on healthy fresh foods and
educational opportunities.
Jeanine Leutenegger is the
dynamic owner and operator of
Fresh Xpress. Her truck is filled
with fresh local food, homemade
bread and regular household items.
She makes gift baskets and now
prepares her own soups in her new
kitchen. She stops at many locations
in the North Perth, Minto, Mapleton,
South Bruce and the Howick area.
She invited guests to visit her truck
in the parking lot and receive a free
cookie.
Tanya Olson shared her
presentation "My Tattoo My Story".
A very inspiring and courageous
lady, spoke of how she lived through
breast cancer and the tattoos that
helped tell her story and heal. When
her hair began to fall out she was
encouraged to buy a wig. However,
Olsen knew she didn't want one. She
ripped off the first hair piece just
seconds after trying it on. She says
covering her head felt wrong. Rather
than watch her hair fall out in
chunks, Olsen says it was easier to
shave it all off at once. She covered

her bald head with an ornate henna
tattoo.
After surgery she didn't want to
see the scars, but she didn't want to
hide them either. Her solution was to
cover the marks with a permanent
tattoo that stretched across her torso,
from her left hip to her right
shoulder. The tree was one she saw
while rock climbing in Kentucky.
"If it's something I have to look at
day after day... then I want it to be a
good memory," Olsen said.
Cancer isn't a choice, but she says
you can choose how you'll
remember it.
Huron Perth District WI President
thanked Tanya for sharing her story
after she received a standing
ovation.

understanding we have to know it is
not the end — it is the beginning. God
is always with us; we are not alone.
Christ will guide us as long as we
have belief.
The hymn of response, "I See a
New Heaven" was followed by
Nancy Jardin reporting on the
Minute for Missions. Larry Harper
and Doug Walker took up the
offering which was dedicated. The
closing hymn "0 For a Thousand
Tongues" was sung and the
benediction and blessing "Go Now
In Peace" concluded the morning
worship service.
Friends and neighbours wish Kay
Roberts, formerly of Belgrave, a
speedy recovery after a recent fall
and breaking her hip. At the present
time she is in the hospital but hopes
to be home soon.
