Once a year we stop and give thanks for the thousands of people who put their lives on hold to serve our country. For many in our midst, the sadness of death engulfs this November day as family members are honoured and remembered. The lost opportunities, the missing young person and the difficult times, are pondered with loss as the base. For us, we are in thanksgiving mode as pictures of war play in our minds and stories from years past are recalled. Only because our young people went into service are we able to speak freely, move unrestricted and enjoy the peace that Canada has. At the Branch Our whole area has been built on newcomers to our country, whether your folks came in the 1800s or the 1950s or last year, we live in a wonderful country. Oh yes, our past builds the present and the next time you're speaking with a new Canadian ask them what the best part of living here is, and be reminded of the sacrifices for that gift. May we be so generous. Autumn is our settling season. With all the great weather this fall, our preparation for winter should be well in hand. It seems there's always something else. Oh well, it will get done or not. One autumn tradition that remains is the fall/fowl suppers that each community held. It was a time to gather, enjoy the bounty of the land and connect with the neighbours. So several suppers have been held and more are fast approaching. so get the details and tickets for the nights of your choice. Looking back is always fun, but getting ready and looking to the future is more important. We do not remain static, the world moves on and so our minds need to be aware of RD draws over 150 By Jo -Ann McDonald It was a cold, crisp windy day but with sunshine, for all attending the Remembrance Day services. The service was well attended by over 150 people including veterans, branch members, Cadets, Pipe Band members, North Woods Elementary School students and members of the public. The service was conducted by President Jo -Ann McDonald and Branch Padre Sandra Cable. Following the cenotaph service, the group attended the Brussels United Church service conducted by Sandra Cable. When the 60 or so people returned to the Brussels Legion Branch, they enjoyed a soup and sandwich lunch. There were six Branch members at the Huronlea service with nearly 50 residents attending. The cenotaph had an extra beautiful feature this year with the placing of 47 ceramic poppies. The poppies were made by many Huron County volunteers during the summer and over 550 were placed around the Square in Goderich. They were made to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 161st Huron Battalion that served during the First World War. All Legion Branches received the ceramic poppies this past week to equal the number of names of those lost during the war engraved on the cenotaph. The Branch is very pleased to have received the 47 and some of them are now displayed in the Branch for all to see. The Thursday night darts had 10 darters attend for the night's play. Winners were: first, Deb Burch and John Stadelmann; second, Wayne Smith, Penny Reynolds and Sandra Josling; high, Gord Jacklin, 117 and sister Marlene Rutledge, 124. Members and non-members can come out to play darts which start at 8 p.m. and only cost $1. Darts are available for use. The Saturday afternoon euchre had 11 tables of players. The Saturday night wings and meat draws had a good crowd of nearly 40 people enjoy the evening. It was held downstairs for the homey atmosphere and the wings Continued on page 6 changes that affect you, your life and your interests. My good friend Sheila Richards used to say you need to have friends in every age group. She was so right and we are in trouble when we only see the view that is comfortable to us. When we are aware that others have differing opinions, then change need not be a surprise. On Thursday evening the stores of the village are offering you the opportunity to view their wares.
