Ten Pas tradition firmly rooted in Remembrance Day
Continued from page 2
and say he was away on business and
he wouldn't have to work that week.
The war was winding down and it
was 1945 and Henk was nine years
old. The Germans were being chased
out of Holland by the Allied Forces.
It was May 7, the day before
Freedom Day and the Germans came
to the Ten Pas home. The soldiers
were hungry and they asked if Mrs.
Ten Pas would make them some
food. She prepared potatoes and
fried eggs for them.
The morning of Freedom Day, the
soldiers came again to the house.
This time it was to warn the family
to hide the children in the corners
away from the windows. The
Germans were going to plant
explosives in the tree -lined road and
blow up the trees to try and stop the
Allies from catching up. The
explosions blew out every piece of
glass of the windows in the house,
but the family was unharmed.
The Allies were very close behind
and entered the village of
Winterswyk and found the roads
blocked by the trees. They worked to
clear the roads of the trees and upon
arriving at the Ten Pas home, a
Canadian crew was hungry. Again,
Mrs. Ten Pas was asked to make
fresh baked potatoes and fresh fried
eggs, from the few hens they had.
The soldiers gave Henk's father
oranges, cigarettes, Coke and
marmalade jam.
The war was over and the town
partied and danced in celebration.
Henk remembers that they were
good guys and he was happy to meet
the Canadian soldiers. It is these
stories that remind us that many in
our community have seen firsthand
what happened during the war and
how it has touched the lives of many
in our community unknown to us.
The second story is from the
granddaughter of Henk Ten Pas. It is
Hard at work
The Brussels Legion and Cadet Corps were hard at work late last month as the year's Poppy
Campaign began. Legion and Cadet members could be seen throughout the village going
door-to-door canvassing for the campaign. They could also be seen outside of popular
community events like Sgt. Thomas Warner, left, and Master Cpl. Dylan Metzger, who were
stationed at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre as the Brussels Lions hosted a
community breakfast. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
a story by Kaitlyn McKay that she
wrote many years ago as an 11 -year-
old child about Remembrance Day.
Growing up in a family where
Remembrance Day was celebrated
because of the importance it had
played in the family's history, she
related her thoughts in her story:
Could you ever imagine the
courage and bravery that it took for
each soldier to step onto the
battlefield? Fight for the freedom we
have today and come home wounded
or never come home at all? In the
place we are at today, the only things
we can do, are remember the
soldiers, stand for the two minutes of
silence on Nov. 11 and wear the
blood red poppy with respect. It is
very important.
When you think of the soldiers
that went to war, people think they
are going to war for their lives, but
nothing else, when we have to
remember the families as well as the
friends. Think of the sorrow and pain
that the family and friends are going
through. When you think about the
family, maybe they only cry, but they
might do more than that. From my
opinion I would think that first, they
would be heartbroken to have to see
them leave, then to have the thought
of them never coming back. Even
when the family and friends don't
have any tears left to cry, they will be
thinking about that terrible letter and
when you get it — you're devastated.
It must be a nightmare.
If we don't remember the soldiers,
then war would be here for no
reason. The fact that soldiers risked
their lives for us would be
meaningless. Kneeling at the grave
of a fallen soldier wouldn't mean
anything. Everything is forgotten.
The freedom that the soldiers fought
for wouldn't have a purpose. It
wouldn't be fair.
For the soldiers being brave, their
reward is we have to let them know
that they are heroes. We have to wear
the Poppy. We have to Remember
them at the battle. Being a hero is
probably tougher than it seems. So
what we have to do is think of what
they went through. We thank all of
the soldiers that loved and cared.
We have to stand and remember on
Nov. 11. Wear the blood red Poppy
with respect. We have to keep
Remembrance Day alive.
This is a busy week at the Brussels
Legion Branch. Poppy Chairman
Sandra Josling has been busy
organizing the wreaths and looking
after the details surrounding the
Remembrance Day service at the
Branch. We appreciate everyone
wearing a Poppy and thank all for
their donations to the Poppy fund. A
reminder that the Poppy is to be laid
to rest at the setting of the sun on
Remembrance Day.
The Thursday night blind mixed
