From the Minister's Study God has not left us without truth: Versteeg By Pastor Andrew Versteeg Brussels Community Bible Chapel Recently, a few of us were sitting around chatting after our evening church service and we began to talk about truth and the objectivity of truth. We all agreed that truth is objective, and is based on solid evidential facts. For example we know that is tree is a tree because we can see it and touch it and the facts of our observation tell us that this is a tree. During our conversation someone went to YouTube and pulled up some interviews that were conducted on university campuses to see what people thought about absolute or objective truth. The person doing the interviews was a white male, about medium build. He asked questions about the distinction between gender, skin colour and even about his height. Almost unanimously the answer that he received was that it really depended on what you thought or wanted that determined the answer to the questions that were asked. For example, he asked them if they thought that he was 6'5". The answer was that if you thought you were 6'5" then that was okay and you could believe that and go with that, when clearly he was only about 5'9". There was no suggestion about actual observable measurements to determine was true about his height. This might seem to be somewhat laughable, but it is not when this kind of thinking is extended to morality, ethics and basic everyday living. If we do not use facts and solid evidential facts for determining truth we are only one step away from anarchy. We read about such a situation in the Bible in Judges 21:25: "Everyone did what was right in his own eyes." The book of Judges describes this period in Israel's history as anarchy. lld2 11) otter Cruiditli 1 ellaudiip Nov. 13 - 2 Thess. 1:1-12 International Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church laterrarin "The Flip Side of Persecution" Evangelical Missionary Church Small Group • Tuesdays 7:30 pm at G&M Lisle's, Wingham Women's Ministry • 1st Wed. each month, 7:00 pm Youth Group • Huron Chapel EMC, Auburn Wednesdays 6:30.8:30 pm IF:HURON (for women) • Dec. 5, 7:45 pm at Blyth Creek Maple Farm 10:30 a.m. - Worship & Sunday School at 308 Blyth Rd. The Citizen Proudly Community -Owned Since 1985 A rr Things were going from bad to worse; so much so that the people were turning on each other, and the only rule was that of might and popular ideas. When Jesus was on earth He spoke a lot about the truth. Just before He was sentenced to death on the cross He was questioned by Pilate, the governor, as to why the Jews wanted Him put to death. In His reply Jesus said this: "For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth." Jesus' claim here is that He spoke the truth, and that His life was a picture of the truth. How did Jesus back up this claim that He spoke and demonstrated truth? He performed miracles that were observable with clear evidential results, demonstrating to us that He indeed was who He said He was. Jesus turned water into wine, He stopped the storms, He raised the dead, He multiplied fish and bread from a small lunch into BRUSSELS quantities that could feed 4,000 - 5,000 people, and He healed the sick. Jesus said that "the works that I do in My Father's name, these testify of Me" (John 10:25). Jesus also said, "believe the works, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I in the Father" (John 10:38). In other words Jesus was saying, "look at what I am doing and understand that I am God and that My word is true." Since Jesus is God and His word is truth, should we not be listening to Him when He speaks on matters of truth, right and wrong, morality, ethics, etc.? As churches and people who follow the Lord and His word, we must speak to these matters and bring God's word to these issues. For example, since Jesus is our Creator and the One who is truth, we BUY?
