Remembrance Day service held
Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on Sunday, Nov. 6
were Lorie Falconer and Marilyn
Craig. Ushering were Lissa
Kolkman and John Stewart. Marilyn
Scott was organist and Katie
Dockstader was choir director. Fred
Hakkers ran the Power Point. Emily
Phillips welcomed everyone to
church on the beautiful November
morning. Emily drew everyone's
attention to the announcements
printed in the bulletin. Emily also
thanked the witches and goblins who
gathered up food for the Food Bank
on Oct. 31.
The Legion members and their
colour party marched to church led
by Blyth Festival Artistic Director
Gil Garratt playing the bagpipes.
Katie Dockstader played the Last
Post and Reveille. A one -minute
silence was observed to remember
those who fought World War I and
World War II followed by the
singing of "0 Canada."
Emily welcomed the Legion
members joining the congregation
for the service. She asked Tanner
Brooks to come to the front and light
the candles on the altar table. The
call to worship was repeated
responsively followed by the singing
of the opening prayer "0 God Our
Protector" and the singing of the
Lord's Prayer. Emily asked the
congregation to greet one another.
Trish MacGregor, the worship
leader, led the congregation in
singing of the hymn "We are
Marching." The scripture reading
was from Exodus 13:7-14 and 31,
the story of the Israelites leaving
Egypt and crossing the Red Sea with
the Pharaoh pursuing them. Trish
asked the children if they knew
anything about her. She showed
them pictures of her family and her
extended family. She told them by
looking at pictures and snapshots
they get to know others better. Most
of us remember the World Wars
through pictures and stories told to
us by those who fought in the wars.
She told the children of her
husband's 97 -year-old aunt writing a
book of her memories of being a
nurse in the war. While watching a
video of the wars, the choir sang the
anthem "In Flanders Fields."
Trish's message to the
congregation was "Snapshots." We
all have stories to tell of the pictures
we have taken. This is how most of
us picture the wars by the snapshots
and stories that we have been told.
Not all the veterans can talk about
the wars as they are too painful. It is
the same in the scripture reading, we
can picture the Israelites crossing the
Red Sea as God held the waters back
for them to cross. In order to see
what is in a negative we need a light
to see it. We all have lights to shine.
God is always with us and helps us
shine our lights.
The next hymn "How Firm a
Foundation" was sung. The offering
was received followed by the
offertory response "Praise God
From Whom All Blessings Flow,"
the offertory prayer, the prayers for
the people and silent prayers. The
last hymn "One More Step Along
the World I Go" was followed by the
benediction, the Legion parading out
and the singing of the response
"May God's Sheltering Wings."
Everyone was invited for coffee,
tea and treats and to talk to Trish.
More subdued Streetfest
to accompany 140th
The Blyth Business Improvement
Area's (BIA) Streetfest celebration
will be taking a more subdued
approach in 2017 as it shares the
stage with the Blyth 140th
anniversary.
The anniversary celebration, which
will happen all year, is set to feature
some significant events on July 29,
the last Saturday in July, which is
traditionally when Streetfest is held.
Irene Kellins reported to the BIA
during the group's Nov. 2 meeting
that a decision had been made to
scale back the event.
"We don't want to close the road
or prevent people from getting to the
[Blyth Community Centre, where
the anniversary events are set to be
held]," she said. "We may have a
sidewalk sale."
Streetfest, which typically sees a
portion of County Road 4 closed
down through the village to allow
for events, vendors and booths to be
operated, will return in 2018.
A living personal Jesus!
(Archibald Brown, 1884)
"Christ is all!" Colossians 3:11
Christianity is all centered in a person! Conversion is not a mere change of
human opinion; it is the devotion of the heart to a person. A converted man
is not a man who just changes his views concerning certain facts, or
theories, or doctrines — but he is a man whose heart has become devoted
to a living Christ. An your religion, if it is worth anything — will be
centered in a living personal Jesus.
Your doctrines will all come from Him;
your motives will be found in Him;
your joys will be found in Him;
your acceptance will be found in Him;
your completeness will be found in Him!
"You are complete in Him!" Colossians 2:10
