Entertainment & Leisure 'The Drawer Boy' film seeking financial backing Pulling ahead Stuart Hughes, one of the actors involved in The Drawer Boy, a film based on the play of the same name that was produced on the Blyth Festival stage in 2000, reads his script at the Lobb farm in Goderich Township. The film and play give a behind -the -scenes glimpse into the creation of the 1972 play The Farm Show which marked the start of a new kind of Canadian theatre. (File photo) After weeks of filming in a number of Huron County locations, The Drawer Boy film is in post -production and looking for funding support. The Toronto-based crew was in Huron County in September filming at various local locations, including the Belgrave-area home that inspired Peter Colley's 1979 Blyth Festival production of I'll Be Back Before Midnight, one of the Goderich Township Lobb farms and a Listowel -area dairy farm. During this time, many of the actors lived in apartments in Blyth and could be seen around the village when they weren't shooting. The group had been working on the film in Huron County since Aug. 22 and they wrapped production in mid-September. The film is based on the play which was produced on the Blyth Festival stage in 2000 and tells the story of The Farm Show in 1972 — portraying Festival regulars like Paul Thompson, David Fox and Miles Potter — which was the dawn of an alternative form of Canadian theatre, born on farms in Goderich Township. The Farm Show in many ways laid the groundwork for the Blyth Festival. The project is being produced by the team of Aviva Armour -Ostroff and Arturo Perez Torres. Armour - Ostroff is serving as the film's co- producer and associate director, while Perez Torres is co -producing and directing the film. Armour -Ostroff, in an interview with The Citizen, says her background is in theatre and she has always been familiar with the Blyth Festival and its productions. Perez Torres came to Toronto from Mexico City 13 years ago and in that time he has made a number of documentary films, tackling subjects such as undocumented South American immigrants to Canadian municipal elections. Blyth Lighting of the Lights relocated This Christmas the Blyth Business Improvement Area's Lighting of the Lights will be shifting across the street from its traditional space in front of Blyth's Memorial Hall. The hall can't be used due to ongoing renovations of the courtyard at the space which is part of a multi- million dollar renovation to the entire hall through Blyth Arts and Cultural Initiative 14/19 Inc. Sharon Davis, who previously ran Sharon's Cars and Miniatures, will be hosting the lighting of the lights at her storefront at 432 Queen Street, directly across from the front doors of Memorial Hall. The event is set for Saturday, Nov. 26 and Sal's Alley The official kickoff of the Blyth 140th anniversary celebration in 2017 was held at the municipal parking lot in front of Scrimgeour's Food Market on Saturday. The event featured food, Blyth Cowbell Brewing Company beer, fun and music from Sal's Alley, shown above, throughout the day. "If it wasn't hard, then I've definitely stayed way too long." However, in many ways, leaving the churches may be the best way to maintain those friendships in the future, he said. Clark says that the way forward for the churches is that a "vacancy" will be declared and the senior members of the church will seek to fill the vacancy. During the process, while Clark won't be involved, he will certainly act as an advocate for the communities of Blyth and the feels Brussels and suggest churches to candidates he would be a good fit. "We're going to have the lighting of the lights, of course, and then a ginger bread decorating event for the kids and some snacks for everyone." Davis said plans are also in place to have a Christmas tree placed in the green space beside her storefront as well as her own collection of animatronic Christmas figures in the storefront to welcome the holiday season. Local musicians are also being invited to be a part of the event. When asked why Davis would put her own space forward for the celebration, she said it was important to keep the event going. "It's always been here since I moved here and it's something people look forward to," she said. "We have to keep it going so when Memorial Hall is finished, we can hold the event there again." Davis said the event, along with other annual outings organized by local groups, are important for the village and keep the people who live in Blyth invested in their community. 0.3 116p Make Your Own Beer, Wine, Coolers and Fruit Wine (Chex' here or at home/) 84 Kingston St., GODERICH 524-2323 The two have been together for a number of years, but The Drawer Boy represents the first time they have actually worked together. It started simply enough, Armour - Ostroff says, when she put a call out on social media asking theatre fans which Canadian play they'd most like to see adapted into a film. The answer that came back was The Drawer Boy. With playwright Michael Healey's blessing, the two began production. The project began two years ago with location scouting and casting and then made its way to Huron County for just under a month of on - location shooting. The filmmakers are now in post- production on the film and have established a fundraising goal of $50,000 to help bring the project to fruition. There is a deadline of Nov. 8 for the group's fundraising efforts. With a page on the crowdfunding website indiegogo.com, the filmmakers are attempting to raise funds from those interested in seeing the film completed. As of Tuesday morning, the fundraising total sat at just over $14,000 from over 100 backers. There are a number of fundraising levels starting at $5 and running all the way up to $5,000. There are several perks associated with the higher levels of fundraising, including an Associate Producer credit for a $1,000 donation or an Executive Producer credit for a $5,000 donation.
