Baynton honoured with prestigious HCFA award An outstanding contribution Ray Baynton was honoured late last month as the Huron County Federation of Agriculture held its annual meeting in Holmesville. Baynton, who was a long-time radio personality and agricultural journalist, said he was honoured to win the award, noting distinguished past winners such as The Citizen Publisher Keith Roulston. Pot The Rural Voice Broadcasting over radio and television might be better termed `narrowcasting' said retired agricultural journalist and radio personality, Ray Baynton, who was the guest speaker and an award winner at the Huron County Federation of Agriculture's annual banquet held Oct. 21 in Holmesville. "Avoid getting caught up in the echo chamber and check out other voices. When you do that, it helps you understand the other side," advised Baynton, who recently retired as the voice of agriculture on AM 920, CKNX radio, where he was employed as a farm and news director. When he started out 43 years ago, Huron County residents could pick up maybe four radio stations and CKNX in Wingham was one. Now, everyone has access to a radio station for every style of music and commentary imaginable. "On the surface that sounds great because everyone can have a voice," says Baynton. "However, when we were one of few voices, we had to offer of lot of everything to meet the needs of listeners" With so many stations now trying to secure market -share, the trend is to present a specialized or narrow point of view. In terms of entertainment, it's maybe not so critical. However, when a station chooses a political bent and veers far to the left or right, they attract listeners with similar viewpoints. Except now those listeners aren't receiving a balanced report. If all listeners hear is a political viewpoint slanted far to the right, it solidifies their philosophy and, at its most harsh, can create a parallel universe between those who veer to the left. Baynton pointed to the U.S. federal election as a case in point. Supporters of Donald Trump who only choose to listen to his viewpoints as presented by supporting media cannot comprehend how Hillary Clinton is leading in the polls. The parallel universe also exists in the agricultural community, suggests Baynton. Radical animal rights activists can't understand how farmers can raise animals to eat while farmers view the actions of activists as extreme when, to them, eating animals for protein is as natural as breathing. "Their perspectives are so different from each other that it feels like they don't live in the same world," he said. Has media encouraged that? He believes so, but he refuses to accept that media is the villain. "Decisions made on what to broadcast are affected by ratings and profits," said Baynton. "Radio stations won't put money into broadcasting no one wants to listen to in the same way that farmers won't grow a crop if nobody wants to eat it." To get followers, it seems each new station is a little more extreme than the one before. As to Twitter, Baynton said he shudders at the 140 character restriction. "It's a good place to vent and share one-liners but as a place for discourse? Not so much" While he doesn't have a solution to fix the problem, he said it's imperative listeners are aware of the `narrowcasting' situation so they can search out a balance of information and viewpoints. In this way, listeners can better understand where the other side is coming from because understanding critics or opposition creates balance, allowing for more intelligent discourse. Baynton was then lauded for his "unbiased and ethical influence" as a news director before being presented with the Huron County Federation Outstanding Contribution to Agriculture Award by Doug and Gerry Fortune. Noting that the first recipient of the award was North Huron Publishing Publisher and journalist Keith Roulston, Baynton said he was pleased to be recognized and appreciated for his work in journalism. "I've done all this for a great many years and you are never sure whether people notice or not. Thank you," he said.
