THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3, 2016. From the Minister's Study Have some fun, the Bible tells you to By Rev. Mark Royall Huron Chapel Evangelical Missionary Church, Auburn In the Bible there is this amazing story of a great leader named Nehemiah who was rebuilding a strong healthy society and a city for families to live in called Jerusalem. However Nehemiah faced obstacles. There was an enemy trying to take him and the people down. There was an enemy threatening to attack and dismantle all their efforts. The families were being threatened but Nehemiah told them, "Don't be afraid of them (the enemy). Remember the Lord, who is great and awesome, and fight for your families, your sons and your daughters, your wives and your homes." (Nehemiah 4:14). To sum up Nehemiah's words, "Don't be afraid... instead remember God is awesome... fight for your family because your family is worth fighting for." One of the ways I have personally fought to have an awesome family was to make sure I was never too busy to have fun with them. Having fun together is a common denominator of awesome families. Awesome families know how to play, to laugh and to enjoy life together. The Bible tells us to be like the ant who works hard and is not lazy but did you know that the Bible also commands us to play and to have fun? Here is a Bible verse you can put on your fridge at home, "So I recommend having fun..." (Ecclesiastes 8:15a) Do you realize that everything God created in this world He created for you to enjoy? God gives us a life to be enjoyed... not just to be endured. The Bible says, "Their trust should be in God, who richly gives us all we need for our enjoyment." (1Timothy 6:17) When my kids were growing up I loved trying to be creative with how I would have fun with them. Once I took them to Disneyland in California where I surprised them by arranging to have the biggest and baddest limousine pick us up at the airport. The chauffeur took us cruising all around Hollywood. We parked right on Hollywood Boulevard, just because with a limousine you can, and went looking for all the stars along the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Another time I surprised the girls by flying our family to Las Vegas where I took them to a Jonas Brothers concert who, as it happened, were staying in the same hotel we were. Once, when we were living out in British Columbia I announced to the family, just days before Thanksgiving, that we were flying t t t t t t t t t t t t t t t Small Group • Tuesdays 7:30 pm at GAM Lisle's, Wingham Women's Ministry • lst Wed. each month, 7:00 pm Youth Group • Huron Chapel EMC, Aubum Wednesdays 6:30.8:30 pm IF:HURON (for women) • Nov. 7, 6:45 pm at Blyth Creek Maple Farm 10:30 a.m. — Worship & Sunday School at 308 Blyth Rd. A few weeks ago I messaged my three daughters and I asked them, "What is a favourite family memory from when you were young?" My oldest daughter Ashlea responded, "I think of the time when we were snowed in for three days with no electricity. We had to cook food in our fireplace and fetch water from the stream on our property." My daughter Bethany wrote back, "One of my favourite family memories happened when the power went go out. We would all get into one room with a bunch of candles and/or the fireplace and share our favourite memories and stories. I loved it because it was a special time to spend together without computers, TV, phones, etc." My youngest, Carly, wrote about how when we lived out in the countryside we would go outside at night with glow sticks and play hide and seek. Not one of them mentioned the concert in Las Vegas, or the limousine ride in Hollywood or Disneyland. The most precious and cherished times for them were the ordinary days when we stopped working and being busy and hung out together without television, phones and computers. It struck me that what they valued most were the family times that cost me nothing but my time and attention. Our children want our time. They value your attention, your focus and your love. Kids spell love this way, t.i.m.e. More than things and gadgets... kids need a dad and mom who love one another and who will give them their time. When author Bob Goff was with us here last May, he and I were driving together to the airport. With just the two of us in the car we spoke about life and God and family. He said he only plans out his events and speaking engagements nine months in advance. "Why is that," I asked? He told me, "Because as soon as one of my kids come and tell me I am going to be a grandfather, I am going to quit speaking and travelling so that I can be present for my grandkids." Yes, work hard. Don't be lazy but... enjoy life. This is what the Bible tells us. So I commend the enjoyment of life, because there is nothing better for a person under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany them in their toil all the days of the life God has given them under the sun." Ecclesiastes 8:15 Did you know this verse was in the Bible? BUY? SELL?
