The Blyth Brussels Novice Local League Crusaders took on the Listowel Cyclones on Sunday
at the Blyth and District Community Centre. Unfortunately, the Crusaders couldn't find the net,
losing 4-0 to the Cyclones. Above a Listowel player succeeds in getting the puck over the
Crusaders' goalie, but couldn't fit the puck under the cross -bar, resulting in a near -goal. (Shawn

Brussels curling starts Nov. 21
The Brussels Curling Club
executive recently held its
2016/2017 planning meeting at the
home of Jeff Cardiff. There were
five members present to discuss the
upcoming year.
Curling will start on Nov. 21.
Practice and instructions for new
curlers will be at 6:30 p.m. and the
game will start at 7 p.m. New curlers
are welcome and all they need to
bring is a pair of clean shoes.
Curling brooms are available from
the club. The draw committee
welcomes inquires about the game
of curling from anyone interested
There are three draws during the
course of the 15 -game season. Each
draw is five games and at the end of
the draw is a social evening with
snacks. A social time for fun and
visiting is held each week.
Curling has become a popular
game to watch on television with
many different "spiels" being
featured. Some interesting facts
include the "rocks" are 44 lbs. each
of granite and are thrown down the
sheet or "ice" to the "house". The
house is three circles with a
circumference of about 10 feet
across. The centre of the house is
commonly referred to as the
"button". The object is to "deliver"
or throw a rock so it becomes closest
to the button. Teams alternate
throwing the red and yellow rocks
with expert guidance from the
"skip".
There are four members on a
team, each throwing two rocks,
alternating with the opposition
counterpart. The lead throws the first
rock, followed by the "second", then
the "vice" and then the "skip".
The "last rock" thrown is
determined by a flip of a coin at the
beginning of a game and as the game
progresses, whoever "wins" the
"end", scores the points, starts the
next end.
An end consists of each team
throwing eight rocks alternately with
their opposition. A game can consist
of eight or 10 ends, with Brussels
playing eight end games each night.
The art to being a good curler is
balance. It is needed to throw a curl
and to slide beside the rock while
sweeping.
A broom is an important piece of
equipment as it is used for balance,
to clean the rock, to aim at during
delivery, to sweep the rock to help it
make it to the other end, or to keep
the rock from curling or to help the
rock in curl in some cases.
Just some great information to
know before coming to curl. We
hope anyone interested will call
Steve or Mike.
winter futsal league
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
Huron FC is starting a new winter
futsal league to give soccer and
futsal players a chance to hone their
craft during the colder season.
Club President Annie Sparling of
Blyth explained the club will meet
throughout the next four months
with two ages groups; one for
players born between 1999 and 2002
and one for players born in 2003 and
2004.
"We have people willing to put
teams together that will be filling out
the league," she said. "If there are
other people wanting to join,
however, we wanted to get the word
out there."
Futsal is indoor soccer, played
with five players to a side, that is a
much more fast paced game than
soccer, Sparling said.
Currently, teams are entering the
leagues from schools in Clinton,
London, Goderich and Wingham as
well as community teams, like one
from the northern end of Central
Huron, Sparling said.
Games will be played throughout
the winter season starting on Nov. 19
for both leagues.
The younger group will play Dec.
3 and 17, then break for Christmas,
before playing Jan. 14 and Feb. 11
then hosting a year-end tournament
on Feb. 25.
The older group plays Nov. 19,
Dec. 17 and Feb. 11 and will then
take part in three all -day
tournaments, two at F.E. Madill
Secondary School in Wingham and
one in Listowel.
"We wanted to make the schedule
flexible so that students who have
jobs can continue to work them and
parents won't have difficulties
getting the students to the games,"
Sparling said. "Each team will play
multiple games on game days."
Sparling also said that the games
are scheduled so that players who
also play in a London-based futsal
league won't miss their own games.

league or to register, contact
