Swinging Seniors to host Christmas meal at Legion branch From Marilyn's Desk Remembrance With Remembrance Day fast approaching, the annual Blyth Legion Poppy Drive started last Saturday with the Poppy canvass. (Shawn Loughlin photo) Drive-thru lunch set for Nov. 10 Greeting at Blyth United Church on Anniversary Sunday, Oct. 30 were Terry Richmond and Marilyn Craig. Ushering were Nicole Kerr, Brenda Brooks and Lissa Kolkman. Marilyn Scott was organist and Katie Dockstader was choir director. Fred Hakkers ran the power point. Lavern Clark welcomed everyone to church and a special welcome was given to the members of the Brussels United Church who celebrated their anniversary along with Blyth. Lavern drew everyone's attention to the announcements printed in the bulletin with special attention that the United Church Women are holding a drive-thru lunch and supper on Nov. 10, the menu being lasagna, caesar salad and dessert for $12. He also mentioned that the Holy Rollers will be in action again this month. You can still order beef pies, but the turkey orders are full. There is a "Minute to Win It" with a Christmas theme at Blyth United Church for kids in Grades 4-8. It is open for all kids in the area at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 15. Lavern invited two young girls to come to the front and light the Christ Candle and other candles on the altar table. Rev. Gary Clark said that Anniversary Sunday is a time to look back and also a time to look to the future. Rev. Clark read names of ministers that had ministered in both Brussels and Blyth and the congregation was to answer present when they recognized the name. FREE 2016 Citizen Phone Books are available at our offices in Blyth and Brussels The Citizen 413 Queen St., Blyth 541 Turnberry St., Brussels The opening prayer "0 God Our Protector: was sung. Rev. Clark invited everyone to greet one another. The first hymn "Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty" was sung. The scripture was from Exodus 5-12. The story of Moses asking the Pharaoh to let the Israelites go and when Pharaoh would not comply God sent plagues upon the Egyptians. The choir sang the anthem "Let the Whole Creation Cry." The children were asked to come to the front for their story time. Rev. Clark had them tape a string along the front seat at each end and in the middle. He told the children of things that happened from 1860 until present time in the churches. In 1876, Brussels Church was built and in 1877 Blyth Church was built. In 1925, the United Church was formed and in 1962 the present church was built in Blyth. In 2008 Rev. Clark came to be our minister and the middle was present day. He asked the children what the rest of the string was for. He told them it was the future of the church and they would be the future. The children said a prayer along with Rev. Clark and the congregation and went downstairs for their time of fellowship. Rev. Clark's message to the congregation was "Moses, The First Motivational Speaker." In the scriptures it tells of Moses trying to get Pharaoh to let the Israelites go and release them from slavery. Pharaoh refused and God sent plagues upon the Egyptian people until finally the Pharaoh released the Israelites after their first born was taken. God asks us to change our ways and by changing the smallest thing it may change the world and the way we think in the future. God will be with us every step of the way. The next hymn "Lead On, 0 Cloud of Presence" was followed by the receiving of the offering, the offertory response "Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow" the offertory prayer, the prayers for the people and the singing of the Lord's Prayer, the benediction and the saying of grace. Everyone was invited downstairs for a lunch of scalloped potatoes, ham and baked beans supplied by Blyth Congregation and many different delicious desserts supplied by the Brussels congregation. Miller) "Lovers of pleasure --rather than lovers of God; having a form of godliness --but denying its power." 2 Timothy 3:4-5 Is the love of pleasure and amusement growing on you --gaining the power and authority over you? Is it dulling the keenness of your zest for spiritual pleasures? Is it making Bible study, prayer, communion with Christ, and meditation upon holy themes --less sweet enjoyments than they once were? Is it making your hunger and thirst for righteousness and for God --less intense? Is it interfering with the comfort and blessing which you used of find in church services, or in Christ's work? If so, there is only one thing to do --hurry... to return to God, to abandon the pleasure or amusement which is imperiling your soul, and to find in Christ, the joy which the world cannot give, and which never harms any aspect of life. We must test all our pleasures and amusements by this rule: Are they helping us to grow into Christ -likeness and spiritual beauty? "All things are lawful --but not all things are profitable. All things are lawful --but not all things edify." 1 Corinthians 10:23 A Grace Gem Submitted by: Immanuel United Reformed Church, Listowel, ON 519-291-1956
