A long-awaited honour
Jo -Ann McDonald, centre, President of the Brussels
Legion, was honoured earlier this month at the District C
Fall Convention at Branch 167 in Exeter with first place in
the Legion's Scrapbook Competition, Category E.
McDonald has been awarded for her scrapbooking efforts
through the Legion several times before. From left: VP of

By Jo -Ann McDonald
The Brussels Skating Club hosted
a fundraising fish fry at the Brussels
Legion Branch on Saturday. They
fed about 260 people and it was a
good day. Comrades working for the
Branch included Ryan Shaw, Mark
Campbell, Glenn Bridge, Tyler
Verbeek, Murray Lowe and Barrie
Currie. A good job by all.
The 2016 Poppy canvas will be
held on Saturday, Oct. 29, this
Saturday and we need Branch
members to come out and help. The
canvas starts at 9 a.m. and will be
finished by noon. The jobs consist of
door-to-door canvas, posting at local
outlets, or driving Cadets to outlying
hamlets or farther parts of town. The
more Comrades that help, the faster
the canvas is completed.
Looking for some fun on
Thursday evenings? The blind
mixed darts will start on Thursday,
Nov. 3. Everyone is welcome to join

Well, fall has arrived with all the
changes that are expected. Good
leaf -kicking days were available as
well as time to tuck in a few more
plants for next year's enjoyment. the
changes that our seasons offer are
always a reminder that life is fluid
with subtle and not -so -subtle
adjustments to our living.
The wrap-up meeting for the
Brussels Farmers' Market folks was
held at the Brussels Library last
week with the board, vendors and
their families in attendance. A great
meal, stories to share, business to
conduct and plans to be made
covered the evening. Participation,
of the long-term kind is an issue, as
with many volunteer organizations.
Ideas, challenges and concerns were
shared as these folks see the market
as an important part of community.
Halloween decorations are
popping up all over and the
costumes choices of the young have
been made. Blyth is having a
Halloween dance if you have a
costume that needs a display spot or
just the fun of getting it out for the
kids may be enough.
This Sunday is a special service at
Blyth United as the co-operating
ministry of Blyth and Brussels
United Churches is celebrated at 11
a.m. - of course lunch to follow. For
several years we have shared the
costs and work needed to remain
viable congregations. This way of

doing church makes sense as
worship and work of a congregation
is less important for many folks. In
the scheme of things the demand
remains for the services of a minister
when the big issues of life happen.
So we celebrate this co-operating
ministry by worshipping and
feasting together. Join us at 11 a.m.
Looking into November - the
Agricultural Society is hosting a
Ladies Night Nov. 5 that looks like
fun. Local models will show us
some find duds and other things are
planned as well. See any Agriculture
Member to get a ticket soon. As well
on Nov. 8, the 5R's Community
Thrift Shop is celebrating 25 years
in business. The year 1991 seems
like a long time ago but the store has
moved with life and with four
storefronts and a multitude of board
members, we are still in business. A
$5 membership can be purchased
prior to the meeting, giving you
access to a bountiful potluck meal
and the privilege to vote on 5R's
business. Now that's a bargain.
Take care of yourself.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
