Calendar planned for East Wawanosh anniversary
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Members of the East Wawanosh
150th Anniversary Committee are
hoping to use a new calendar to raise
funds for the event's history book,
due to be published next year.
Sylvia Nonkes and Linda Logan,
who are involved with the planning
of the 2017 event, are in charge of
bringing the calendar to life. It began
as an idea that had been discussed
around the committee table and is
now set to be printed next week by
Blyth Printing.
The calendar features current
images from throughout the
township, featuring photographs of
people, scenary and nature, all from
East Wawanosh. Nonkes has
chipped in with some of her own
photography, but the bulk of the
images will come from
accomplished photographers Telfer
Wegg and Bonnie Sitter, two of the
three photographers featured in the
book, The Beauty and Bounty of
Huron County, which was released
in 2013.
The calendars will cost $20 and
will raise money to help with costs
associated with A Snippet In Time,
the East Wawanosh history book that
will be released next year to coincide
with the anniversary.
The concept of a calendar began
when those on the committee were
seeking a method to raise money for
the book. A calendar seemed like a
perfect way to not only raise money
for the project, Nonkes said, but to
give residents a preview of what they
can expect in the book.
A Snippet In Time will feature
photography from both Sitter and
Wegg, as well as several locals, in
addition to plenty of history and
familiar faces to East Wawanosh
residents, she said.
"Over the last six months,
hundreds of pictures have been taken
and all kinds of stories and
submissions have been given to the
committee, which is now in the
process of compiling it into a book,"
Nonkes said.
She says the book will be a hard -
covered coffee table book full of
colour photographs.
"It promises to be filled with an
appreciation for the beauty and
people of East Wawanosh
Township," she said.
Logan says that while much of the
committee's focus is on the
upcoming book release next year,
she is still selling the 1992 history
book offering, From Wilderness to
Wawanosh, for $25 each, down from
$40 per book when it was first
released.
Calendars will be $20 and will be
available, organizers hope,
beginning the week of Monday, Nov.
7. They will be available at The
Citizen's Blyth office and The Maple
and Moose in Blyth, Huron Bay Co-
op in Auburn and Belgrave, the
Belgrave Variety Store, Snell Feed
and Supply in Westfield and
Christine's Clothes Closet in
Wingham
Organizers will also have the
calendars ready to be purchased at

Ag. Society plans ladies night
The Brussels Agricultural Society
is hosting a Ladies Night fundraiser
on Nov. 5 to help raise money for the
2017 Brussels Fall Fair and its
partnership with the International
Plowing Match in Walton.
Jenna Fischer of the society has
spearheaded the event, saying she
felt that with the Brussels Optimist
Club holding its annual Harvest Stag
for men in Brussels every fall, she
felt the women of the community
deserved a night out as well.
The Ladies Night will be held on
Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community Centre
and the doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
The evening will feature hors
d' oeuvre and a bar.
The program will begin shortly
after the doors open at 7:30 p.m.
with a fashion show care of Marita's
Fashion Boutique in Clinton and
Brussels' own The Cowboy Loft.
Then, at 9 p.m., a hypnotist will take
to the stage.
Tickets for the event are $30 and if
those interested in attending have a
group of eight, an entire table can be
reserved by calling one of the
organizers.
For tickets, call Fischer at 519-
357-8342 or Nicole Noble at 519-
531-0484 or ask any member of the
Brussels Agricultural Society for
help in finding a ticket.
