FDNH Chief David Sparling ran the event, held annually at the Belgrave Community Centre. The event recognizes the efforts of firefighters in the Wingham and Blyth halls of the Fire Department of North Huron. Jeff Howson and Shawn McCurdy were the first group to be recognized as the two firefighters were promoted to Captain. "One of the initiatives that I've carried over from my predecessor is that there are no free rides in this fire department," Sparling said later in the evening. "Everyone who makes captain has worked hard for it and deserves it." The fourth recruit class since the FDNH's inception was sworn in. Andy Williams, Fred Kreuger, Renny James, Kelsy Long, Kevin Dunn, Ron Stevenson and Mike McDowell were each recognized for their year of work with the department that precedes being named a full-fledged firefighter. Captain Mike McDonald and firefighter Alain Dery received their 20 -year medals from the Governor General, which Sparling said are a rarity across the province. "In a time when community service has become less than fashionable, these medals mark something special," Sparling said. "Across the country, volunteer firefighters or on-call firefighters last an average of five years, so to have a two 20 -year medals is impressive." Sparling said that the firefighters make his job easy, going on to say that he feels comfortable leaving the community in their hands whenever he isn't on call. #1 And We Lig /Still Try Harder!
