The renovations are truly top -to - bottom, Newson explained, as the floor underneath the lower hall, which was concrete and dirt, will be replaced with properly formed concrete as well as a vapour barrier to prevent the floor from swelling as it had in the past. The floor in the Bainton Gallery is also being repaired. The flooring in the upper hall will be sturdier than before, Klein explained, as the beams and joists are all being reinforced to bring them up to code. New seats are set to be installed in the space as well, with Newson saying a new emphasis on accessibility was to be realized through the changes. "The apron of the stage, or the front of it, is being replaced," she said. "With that change, we're going to be able to make the front row of seats in the theatre movable and have the opportunity of storing them under the stage, making for more accessible seating." The ceiling in the lower hall will be tiered instead of raked (inclined), she said, which will allow for better soundproofing as well as necessary fire upgrades. The lights and sound system in the upper hall are also being replaced with new systems that will allow users from both the professional theatre and private renters to find what they need in the hall. Newson explained that specialized touch -screen controls are part of the plan for the building which will make operating lighting simpler for renters. "We think the users will be pleased with the new additions" Events like the Remembrance Day ceremony will be able to make use of lighting and sound systems without having to hire a theatre technician to run lights and sound, she said. Users will also be able to access the building without finding a staff member, Newson said, thanks to a new key -card system set to be implemented. Renters will be provided with a card that will gain them access to the building as well as rooms they need, but won't work on other doors in the facility. "We want to modernize the facility where we can to help reduce operating costs," Newson said. On the professional side, new Another view The amount and depth of digging in front of Memorial Hall had some people scratching their heads, but with the significant amount of changes slated for the space, significant changes had to be made underground first. Above is an artist's rendering of what the space will look like once the renovations are completed next year.
