(Photo submitted) The Brussels Medical Dental Centre welcomed Dr. Bradley Ross with a special ceremony on Oct. 13. Ross had opened his practice at the centre on Oct. 4 before the ceremony during which he was welcomed by the municipality, the county and his fellow medical professionals. Mayor Bernie MacLellan thanked Ross for coming to the community and also thanked the Brussels Medical Dental Centre Committee for making Ross' presence there a possibility. "Huron East thanks the committee for the upgrades to the building that made this possible," he said. "[The committee members] have fixed the facility to attract medical professionals. We want physicians here on a regular basis and that makes it possible." Warden Paul Gowing, who is also Mayor of Morris-Turnberry, a partner of Huron East in the centre, said Ross' presence is a perfect example of the "good things" going on across the county, as is the revitalization of the centre. Gowing said the Medical Dental Centre Committee is doing great things for the community of Brussels and they should be commended on their efforts and thanked Ross for choosing to make Brussels part of his practice. All the anxieties of the unknown and things to fear all come to a stop when the eyes of a child tell you all is well with the world. We had Thanksgiving (session two) on Sunday with the parents and five folks who are not yet 10 years old in our midst and what fun to watch and listen. The bright eyes, the chatter of life and the energy level is such a joy to watch, toss in a new pup and life is pretty exciting. The peace that arrives just after they all leave is also a great joy. "Part of that is making sure we have the right person," he said. "I think we nailed it." He welcomed Ross, who had done his residency and served as a locum in Huron County, and said the medical dental centre committee's efforts were proof that, "if you build it, they will come." Williams also offered congratulations to the Huron Community Family Health Team for their efforts in attracting Ross and making the community healthier. Dr. Heather Percival, who had worked with Ross as part of his education, said that Ross' presence in Brussels marked a progression in a process that had began more than two decades ago when doctors were approached to have a presence in Brussels two days a week. For some time, the program saw doctors tending to people in Brussels without them driving, however, due to attrition in the medical field, it didn't last. With Ross operating in Brussels three days a week on top of Dr. Rooyakker's current one day a week schedule, Percival felt the community would be well served. She joked that Brussels was getting a doctor almost as good as herself, as Ross had worked with her in the winter. "Brad is an awesome physician and a relaxed guy," she said. Bill Scott, a member of the Seaforth Community Hospital Foundation welcomed Ross and said he was sure he would enjoy being a part of the Huron Perth Healthcare Alliance. Ralph Watson, the chair of the Huron East/Brussels Community Development Trust, an organization which provides funds for local FROM BRUSSELS initiatives like the centre, and said that Ross' presence was proof that the trust's decision to invest in the centre was a wise one. Mary Stretton, Chair of the Brussels Medical Dental Committee, presented Ross with a picture for his new office. Ross thanked everyone for being welcoming, saying that as a recent graduate in family medicine with mentors including Percival, he is excited to pursue his passion of medical service in a community like Brussels. "This will be the perfect practice for me," he said. "I look forward to providing service for a community that hasn't had a full-time doctor for some time." He said he looks forward to becoming a new neighbour to the people of Huron East and working with everyone.
