Exploring nature
Ava and Jack Nonkes were among those who spent a Sunday in early October at the
Wawanosh Nature Centre for the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority's annual Fall Colour
Tour, which featured wagon rides through the conservation area and an up -close -and -
personal encounter with reptiles such as turtles and snakes. The annual event is one that
many locals mark on their calendars as summer turns to fall. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Cooke honoured
with county award
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Steve Cooke, who served as the
Central Huron fire chief for a
number of years until he passed
away in 2015, will be honoured this

firefighter.
Current Central Huron Fire Chief
Dave Renner informed council of
the county's decision at council's
Oct. 3 meeting. Renner had
nominated Cooke for the award.
Renner informed council that
Cooke's family will receive the
award on behalf of Cooke at
Huron County Council's meeting
on Wednesday, Nov. 2 in Goderich
at the Huron County Courthouse.

Central Huron wants
more information on
tourism decision
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn
told his council he plans to do some
digging in regards to the dissolution
of the Huron Tourism Association.
The issue was raised at council's
Oct. 3 meeting. Council's agenda
package included a press release
from the association regarding the
decision.
Councillor Alison Lobb said she
was very disappointed to hear the
news and disappointed to hear of the
lack of county support for the group
in recent years.
"They did a lot of good work in
Huron County," she said, adding that
she hopes an organization grows in
its place.
Mayor Jim Ginn said he was
surprised by the decision as well, but
understood that many of the
association's former responsibilities
were now being taken over by the
county's Economic Development
Department.
Neither Ginn nor Deputy -Mayor
Dave Jewitt remembered hearing
any updates or decisions made in
regards to the cutting of funds to the
group by Huron County Council, so
Ginn said he would be asking some
questions about the association's
decision at a future meeting.
The press release stated that prior
to 2016, the association had received
over $200,000 in staff support and
funding from the county, which was
reduced to $10,000 in 2016 without
being consulted, in addition to a
number of other roadblocks.
