Custom daylily bred for Wawanosh anniversary
Custom-made
Mike Falconer at Falhaven Farms in Central Huron has custom -bred another daylily for the
area. First it was one for the 2017 International Plowing Match in Walton, then it was for the
Blyth 140th celebration next year, now it's the brilliant golden flower for the East Wawanosh
anniversary celebration next year. The working name for the flower is East Wawanosh Gold
and it is in high demand as it's expected extremely limited quantities of the flower won't even
be available until next fall. It's more likely that the flower will be available to most in the spring

Similar to the Blyth 140th
anniversary and its Belle of Blyth,
the East Wawanosh 2017 Committee
has commissioned the creation of a
custom daylily to help mark the
occasion.
What an honour
Charlie Shaw, right, was honoured at a recent meeting of
the Blyth Lions Club for his 55 years of service with the
club. Shaw received a Chevron Award for reaching the
milestone. District A9 Governor Gary Wood was on hand to
present Shaw with his award. (Photo submitted)
While a name has yet to be
finalized, the committee is working
with East Wawanosh Gold to
describe the golden yellow flower,
which has been custom -bred by
Mike Falconer of Falhaven Farms in
Central Huron.
Organizer Vicky Bremner came up
with the idea, piggybacking on the
concept from the International
Plowing Match 2017 Committee,
who brought Falconer on board for
their daylily.
Bremner was helped along by Neil
and Joan Vincent, who are also
working with her for the township
anniversary.
"It's a beautiful, unique flower
with the fringing along the edge,"
said Joan. "It's a simple, but elegant
bright and unique flower."
Because Falconer has custom -bred
the flower, Bremner says the earliest
daylilies will be available next

spring, although they are already
spoken for due to the demand. She
hopes there will be limited quantities
available in the fall.
When Falconer was interviewed
for the International Plowing Match
flower, he said that it takes two or
three years to custom breed a flower
and the East Wawanosh flower needs
more time, meaning that for
many the flower won't be available
until 2018. Bremner says the flower
won't be "established" enough in
2017.
Over 50 daylilies have already
been requested. As demand grows,
Bremner says a raffle may have to be
held.

hands on one of these in -demand
daylilies, contact Bremner at 519-

Wawanosh Anniversary page on

Drug forum in
Goderich Oct. 19
If you have no clue what a "Bong"
is or a hit of "E" looks like or if you
think "Ice" is only for skating on
then you may want to set aside the
evening of Oct. 19 on your calendar.
The ministry of the Attorney
General's Huron County Youth
Justice Committee Program is
holding an upcoming Drug
Education Forum in Goderich on
Oct. 19 between 7 and 9 p.m. at the
Salvation Army located at 303
Suncoast Drive East.
A special presentation by a
member of the Huron County
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP)
Community Drug Action Team
(CDAT) will give parents, youth
workers, teachers and any other
interested community members the
information they need to know when
it comes to drugs.
This visual presentation will touch
on relevant topics such as: drug
identification, the effects of drugs on
the body, drug paraphernalia,
prescription misuse and abuse, street
lingo, emerging drugs and safety
concerns. Huron OPP will also have
on hand interactive alcohol and
marijuana "Fatal Vision" goggles.
These goggles are designed to
stimulate some of the cognitive and
physical effects of the impairment by
alcohol and marijuana.
Additionally, the Huron County
Health Unit will have resources
available for parenting youth and
how parents can prevent or delay
underage drinking.
"One of our goals with the Drug
Education Forum is to engage
parents and arm them with as much
information as possible on a topic
that isn't common knowledge for
most. With some increased
awareness and knowledge, parents
will be in a better position to identify
the warning signs of illicit drug use.
It is very difficult to have a
conversation with your son or
daughter if you don't know the
language or have any idea what they
are talking about. This is an
excellent opportunity to get
informed on a topic that touches so
many of our youth today," said
Huron County Youth Justice
Committee Chair and Huron
County Crown Attorney, Teresa
Donnelly.
"We know drug traffickers and
distributors can reach into our
communities, large and small. We
also understand the serious and
devastating impacts of the illegal use
and abuse of drugs can have on a
community's safety and well-being.
With that being said, we are very
pleased to have the opportunity to
partner with the Youth Justice
Committee to bring this informative
Drug Education Forum to the
residents of Huron County.
Collaboratively with our community
partners, citizens and neighbours we
can build safer and healthier
communities," said Huron OPP
Detachment Commander, Inspector
Jason Younan. Seating is limited, so
please kindly RSVP prior to Oct. 17
