A NOTE FROM BETTY

The last long weekend of the year
has arrived and as I write this it's
absolutely wonderful autumn
weather. It's a go -for -a -drive day, the
walk -in -the -bush kind of day, or a
sit -on -the -porch day, all the
while contemplating life.
From the time a specific season
and date was set for giving thanks
people all around made note of their
blessings. For us, our list is endless
with things we take for granted, yet
many in the world are not so blessed.
From television we can see the
polluted air of many countries, filthy
water is not part of Huron County
concerns, devastated soil and
landscape is not part of our farming,
gun shots and riots do not make our
daily routine. For many this is life.
For us we give thanks.
As we remember gathering with
family and friends this past
weekend, take time to review the
things that make life good.
The health system is on my
blessing list, the universality of it
allows everyone to have access to
miracles. Surgery that was unheard
of, in this century is almost common
place, but it's still an invasion of the
body and a serious matter. On my
specific list of thanksgiving — Jim
Armstrong is recovering from major
stuff at home and would do even
better if he stopped complaining and
got at his exercises. Nora Stphenson
is keeping track of the Blue Jays'
progress in a confined state, but we
know she'll be out and about soon.
My friend Brent from Waterloo
received a new kidney at the end of
Last minute shopping
The last Brussels Farmer's Market for the 2016 season was held last Friday and featured all
the vegetables, fruits, treats and snacks that has made the event a success over the past
year. Plenty of shoppers made their way to the produce booth, the fundraising barbecue and
the Brussels United Church bake sale as well as the other booths. The market is now closed
until next season. (Denny Scott photo)
Fall Fair
correction
In last week's issue of The Citizen,
an honouree at the Brussels Fall Fair
was misidentified.
Kaleigh McCallum is the winner
of the 2016 Optimists Best All -
Around Participation Award. Mary
Douma had been listed as the
winner, but she is overage for the
award category, so she has
relinquished the award.
The Citizen apologizes for the
error.

The water is safe, however you may notice cloudy or coloured
water. If you experience discoloration of water, run a cold water
tap until the water runs clear. It is recommended to refrain from
doing laundry, especially whites, on these dates.
You may also experience reduced water pressure.

July and after lots of bad things
happening, all the while the new
kidney is working just like it used to,
in another body. Brent looks better
than he has in years, his energy is
returning after major surgery and he
now makes it his mission to get out
and about daily. So thanks to our
universal healthcare in Canada.
Soup & More 2 celebrated six
years in business last week at their
annual meeting. Meals are prepared
by community people at the
Presbyterian Church under guiding
hand of Elaine Armstrong. Val
Nagels and Mary Douma call
volunteers each week for cooking,
serving and table preparations as
well as cleanup. Meals served vary
but 30 is probably average, making
the right amount of food always a
challenge. Christmas and Good
Friday are in the weeks this meal is
not available. Anonymous donations
make this free meal possible so that
conversation, good food and caring
are supplied to anyone who shows
