A touch of something new The Maitland Valley Conservation Authority held its annual Fall Colour Tour at the Wawanosh Nature Centre on Sunday and added some new features to the annual event, including representatives from the Scales Nature Park, which is located just south of Orillia. Those people brought turtles and snakes to the centre for the dozens in attendance to interact with. Here, Ashleigh Colleen, left, shows off what the park has to offer to those who braved the rain on Sunday for the event. (Vicky Bremner photo) Brussels' Davidson Citizen of the Year By Denny Scott The Citizen Jean Davidson has been chosen as the Citizen of the Year for Brussels due to her years of varied service throughout her Huron East community. Davidson was chosen as this year's award recipient by a panel of former Citizen of the Year winners after being nominated by many individuals throughout the community. Members of that panel commented on how Davidson is constantly contributing to the community and how she would be a part of every single community group if she was able. Specifically, they noted her consistent and varied work within the community and how active she was outside of groups she was part of due to personal affiliations like church groups. "What merits consideration for Jean is her consistency," one judge said. "It doesn't matter if she's a part of a group or a church because she will always be helping out. Every year, for example, she helps a lot with the Brussels Optimist Club's annual auction." The judges also noted that Davidson is very active with her family, and that her nieces and nephews love to visit her and spend time with her. Davidson received several nominations from people throughout the community who recognized her work with Soup and More II, her efforts at the Brussels United Church through volunteering and part of the Board of Stewards and as part of the hospitality booth of the Brussels Farmers Market, her volunteer position at the 5Rs Community Thrift Shop, work with both the Brussels Royal Canadian Legion and Lions and her long history with the community. Most of the nominations referred to the fact that Davidson was famous for both the quality and the quanitity of baked goods she produces for local bake sales, some referring to her as the United Church Pie Lady. "She is the main person in pie baking," says one nomination while another says "She bakes enormous amounts of loaves, muffins and cookies for bake sales" Davidson grew up in Morris Township before she moved to Kitchener for work and married Cal Davidson. When she retired, she came back to Brussels, but found herself working again at the Brussels Sales Barn. She was the first female member of the Brussels Lions.
