Laporte seeking ideas for Auburn dog park concept
One day Jacqui Empson Laporte
was in Lucan attending her son's
soccer game when she saw
something that intrigued her. She
noticed a fenced -in dog park by the
field where people's dogs could run
free and play. Jacqui, who owns two
dogs herself, thought, `Wouldn't this
be a great idea for Auburn?'
There does seem to be a need for a
dog park in the village. Jacqui
enquired and discovered that Central
Huron, just one of the three
municipalities that makes up
Auburn, have a current record of 13
dog tags in the village. So if the
other two municipalities had similar
numbers, there could be 30 to 40
dogs taking up residence in Auburn.
Since we are talking about dogs,
let me interject here my favourite
Auburn dog story. Laura May
Chamney had a little dog who knew
to observe the Sabbath day. When
she would take her dog out for his
daily walk, he would always turn
into the Co-op store because the staff
there give him a treat. This was the
dog's daily routine. One day when
her dog got loose and ran away there
was no doubt where he would go.
Sure enough, he showed up at the
Co-op store looking for his treat.
What fascinated me about this dog
was that somehow, I am not sure
how, but somehow on Sundays when
the Co-op store was closed, the dog
knew not to turn into the store to
receive its treat that day. He was able

also revealed that night — a revelation that enthralled students William Hoonaard, front, and

to ascertain when it was Sunday,
knowing the store would not be open
for treats. I find that incredible.
Anyway, back to the dog park,
Jacqui is envisioning the dog park to
be made up of two different sections,
one for larger dogs and the other for
smaller dogs. One possible location
is to put the park beside the baseball
diamond with the entrance being
closer to the playground. The other
possible location would be to put the
park out past left field of the
diamond.
Jacqui also mentioned she would
like to give the opportunity for pet
owners to buy and place a cedar
fence post in memory of their pet.
She is looking for volunteers who
would be able to do a good job
carving pet's names into these posts
which could be had for about a $30
donation.
LaPorte says she is open to ideas
and help from anyone interested
working with her to see the Auburn
Dog Park become a reality. You can

County to support
new hospice study
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Huron County Council has
approved a grant of $20,000 to the
Huron Hospice Palliative Care
Steering Committee to help with a
study to determine the need for
palliative and hospice care in Huron
and Perth Counties.
Huron County will split the cost of
the study with Perth County and will
now be part of the process to
determine if the county and its
facilities can support palliative care
and hospice.
While council supported the
study, it led to some debate, as
several councillors felt the study was
one more case of the provincial
government downloading its fiscal
responsibilities to Huron County.
Huron East Deputy -Mayor Joe
Steffler equated the grant for the
study to council's involvement in the
Southwest Integrated Fibre
Technology (SWIFT) project, in that
if the county wanted to know if it
could accommodate hospice beds, it
had to "pay to play" and fund the
study.
Steffler himself was supportive of
the request, saying there is a need
for hospice and palliative care in
Huron County and there is clear
support for the programs in the
community, which was evident to
anyone who attended the public
open houses on the project.
Chief Administrative Officer
Brenda Orchard said it was
important for the county to help
fund the study, even if the county
