There is lots going on in the world
of farmers — some are cutting and
baling hay, yet again. Some are
spraying the bean crop to get ready
for harvest. Some are already
combining white beans and
soybeans and baling the straw. Some
are busy spraying cover crops ready
to work down and some are
spreading manure. Some are still
getting machinery ready for the
field — sharpening the knives,
greasing, changing points, all lights
ready to flash. Lots of jobs to do.
With a nice stretch of weather
ahead, lots will get done. And of
course — hopefully a day at the
Brussels Fair and the International
Plowing Match 2016 at Harriston.
Congratulations to Gerald Bowles
and bride Mackenzie. They were
married in Waterloo at Golf's and a
reception followed. The groom is the
son of Dave and Karen Bowles and
Terry Fox Run
The Brussels Lions and Optimists clubs hosted the 36th annual Terry Fox Run on Sunday.
The event raises money for cancer research in honour of Terry Fox, who attempted to run
across Canada after losing a leg to cancer in 1980. Fox's attempt ended near Thunder Bay,
5,373 kilometres from where he started in St. John's, Newfoundland. This year's run in
Brussels raised just over $4,000, with 60 runners and 10 volunteers taking part. Over the
years, the Brussels run has raised a total of $135,000 for cancer research. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
grandson of Dorothy Dilworth. The
couple will reside in Waterloo.
Enjoying the three-day beef farm
tour were many local folks. They
went to the Niagara area and toured
two different beef farms. They also
enjoyed a show Oh Canada Eh in
Niagara Falls. Some of the locals
included Clyde and Cathy McClure,
Bob and Joyce Alexander, Dave and
Karen Bowles, Valerie Shortreed,
Murray and Sandra Pepper and Fred
and Teuni Smith.
Our condolences to the family of
Dianne Fetter. Our sympathies to
Paul Sebastian and family and the
rest of the family.
It was the final motocross
weekend at the Walton Raceway.
The Amateur Motocross of Ontario
held races on Saturday until the rain
halted their day. On Sunday, the
Thames Valley Riders Club held
their final Walton race day under
much nicer conditions. A final
mudbog will be held at the raceway.
A reminder to former members of
Duff's United Church that you have
until the end of September to
transfer memberships to another
church before they expire.
The Brussels Ladies Slo-pitch
League held its year-end tournament
on the weekend. The league was
divided into A and B division by the
year-end standings for the
tournament. After the day's play,
topping the A Division were the
repeat champs, the Brussels RBI
team. The champs in the B division
were the Walton Wonders team. A
lousy wet day for playing ball for
about an hour after lunch, but the
late afternoon was great for the final
games. A good year of play
Cultural services supports time capsule
Huron County's Cultural Services
Department is looking to support the
Huron County 2017 Time Capsule
project by way of a grant from the
Ontario150 Partnership Program.
The project aims to commit unique
community history to video while it
still can, creating a time capsule of
Huron County in Canada's
sesquicentennial year.
"The project builds off a library of
vintage films called `Stars of the
Town' that captured a way of life that
epitomized small town Ontario in
the immediate post -World War II era
that have been described as 'the
home movies of southwestern
Ontario communities," reads a report
prepared by Business Development
Manager Claire Carter.
"Eight of these films were shot in
towns and villages in Huron County.
However, the films are silent and
they rely on a high level of local
knowledge to provide context on
what or who is on screen. The first
stage of the project will be to reclaim
some of that local knowledge and
history before it is lost. Production
teams made up of local youth will
visit different villages and towns in
Huron County to screen the original
films and look to current residents to
identify and provide the details
about the people and images in the
films These screenings will be
supported by specialized
programming and museum displays
featuring artifacts of local
significance developed by the Huron
County Museum in order to trigger
conversations with residents about
the historic and contemporary
characteristics, issues and evolving
way of life in their home towns."
Carter says the project is a perfect
fit for the Ontario150 Partnership
Program, with priority areas such as
supporting young artists, promoting
diversity and inclusion and
supporting youth entrepreneurship.
In addition, it will serve to
preserve local history in a unique
way for generations that will now
have a chance to hear stories they
may have otherwise missed.
"Employing group and one-on-
one interviews, the production teams
will endeavour to capture this unique
and individualized community
history and knowledge on video,"
the report says. "Then, working
collaboratively with industry and
sector partners, the project
production teams will edit and
combine the footage with research
materials, archival images, original
music and other media to create new
0
digital content that captures and
interprets the historical and the
contemporary identity of Huron's
many communities at this pivotal
historic moment of Canada and
Ontario's 150th."
Carter, in her report, stated that the
total budget for the project is just
under $125,000 and the county will
be contributing $10,000 through its
2017 budget, as well as $3,000 of in-
kind support to be included in the
project's budget by way of archives
research from the county. All other
funding is expected to come from
external sources, she said.
