Trail receives support from Huron County for grant
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Huron County is supporting a
Canada 150 grant request that will
see the expansion of the Great Lakes
Waterfront Trail between Grand
Bend and Espanola.
The project would take 18 months
to complete and would involve
identifying, signing and mapping a
route through Huron and several
other counties, as well as consulta-
tion with several communities along
the way and the First Nations
communities.
The Waterfront Regeneration
Trust is the body actually applying
for the grant. The organization does
not own or maintain the trail, but
rather co-ordinates partnerships and
trail -wide promotions.
In order to further expand the
trail, a letter from Marlaine
Koehler, executive director of
the Trust states, the group would
work closely with regional tourism
offices, senior government,
foundations and other like-minded
NGOs (non-governmental organiza-
tions).
The total project budget is
$240,000, which allows for a
provision of directional signage,
which community partners would be
asked to install.
Huron County Planner Susanna
Reid presented the plan to
councillors at their Sept. 14
committee of the whole meeting,
held in Goderich. Councillors were
quick to support the grant
application, submitting a letter to
that effect.
"Showcasing our scenic roads,
trails and waterfront as part of the
Great Lakes Waterfront Trail will
help our community and region
realize the economic benefits
associated with cycle tourism in
addition to enjoying other
recreational and environmental
advantages associated with the
Waterfront Trail," says the letter
drafted by Warden Paul Gowing.
"Establishing a route for the Great
Lakes Waterfront Trail from Grand
Bend to Espanola will link the
northern and southern sections of the
trail and create a continuous Great
Hawley receives ec. dev. award
After receiving numerous
accolades, Huron East's Win This
Space economic development
initiative has yet another to add to its
mantle.
The project was honoured by the
Community Futures Ontario with its
annual Community Economic
Development Award of Excellence.
Huron East Economic Development
Officer Jan Hawley received the
award at its annual conference, held
in Kenora last week.
The Huron Business Development
Corporation nominated the Win
This Space team for the
prestigious annual award.
"Nine businesses from the list of
contestants have successfully
opened their doors as a direct result
of the planning and mentoring
services they received as part of the
Win This Space application
process," Hawley said after the win.
"The long-term benefit of a vibrant
downtown community core with
sustainable businesses will make
these Huron County communities a
great economic hub and
employment generator for years to
come."
After the success of the Win This
Space program in Huron East, a
number of other communities have
subsequently rolled out the program,
including Orleans, St. Catharines,
Cobourg, Sudbury, Peterborough,
Walkerton, Smith Falls and Bruce
and Grey Counties, all of whom
have inquired about the program.

Lakes tourism attraction. In addition
to the strategic importance of this
connectivity, this region offers
visitors a rich abundance of cultural
heritage, beaches and culinary
treats."
Gowing, in his letter, also added
that the Great Lakes Waterfront
Trail, when completed, will
connect to the Goderich-to-Guelph
Rail Trail, which would offer
an additional benefit to trail users
and further establish Huron County
as a cycling destination.
Council approved Reid's
recommendation and authorized
the sending of the
letter of support.
