Bridge history revealed
Excited to help out
Every year, students across the area have the chance to participate in Terry Fox Runs through
their schools and their communities and Hullett Central Public School is no different. The run,
which raises money for cancer research, is in its 36th year. From left: Lexus Netterfield-

Do you have your tickets for the
annual smoked pork chop supper
this Saturday? You may have trouble
locating any, for it was to be advance
sales only by Sept. 19. Take-outs are
available.
Students and staff at Hullett
Central Public School invite the
community to a 50th anniversary
celebration on Thursday, Sept. 22.
There will be a barbecue beginning
at 5 p.m., time to tour the rooms and
an official ceremony at 6:45 p.m.
There will be an outdoor showing
of the movie, Finding Dory at
7:30 p.m. Proceeds from the
movie will be part of the
Grade 8 fundraising.
On another note, we took in the
movie Sully recently and would
recommend it to you. It is rated PG
and our 13 -year-old granddaughter
quite enjoyed it as well. How could
one go wrong with Tom Hanks as
the pilot who brought about the

Doing it for Terry
The 36th annual Terry Fox Run was held at Hullett Central Public School on Friday. Students

Last Sunday, I ventured under the
bridge that is being repaired south of
the village to see for myself just
what is happening. Juergen Schmitz
had been similarly curious and had
remarked that the bridge was in
quite bad condition. My
observations confirmed this
statement. Much repair work has
already been done to the concrete
but many cracks are still obvious in
the pillars and arches. Huge iron I -
beams and supports are being
installed as well as new concrete
water courses.
This particular bridge was
installed in the 1940s. No one at that
time could have foreseen the amount
of traffic or the weight of the trucks
that would cross that bridge on a
daily basis now. Here is a story I've
learned about that construction.
Harold Adams lived in the village
but owned the farm just south of
the river on the east side of the
highway. (Ralph Buffinga owns
that farm now having purchased it
from Harold's daughter, Jean
Jardine.) Harold and his team of
horses worked for the bridge
builders, Gibson and Mulberry.
He and his team were the last
traffic across the former bridge
before its demolition. Vehicle traffic
was rerouted a mile and a quarter for
the next two years. A swinging
hammock was installed for foot
traffic. In 1942, Harold and his
team were the first to cross
the new bridge.
Long-time residents
may
remember the bridge having had a
variety of repairs in the intervening
years but the current one seems to be
the most extensive. Can you
imagine rerouting today's traffic?

Evaluation of the Howson Dam in Wingham
Municipal Class Environmental Assessment
Township of North Huron 16-034
The Township of Northern Huron is planning to carry out a Class
Environmental Assessment for the Howson Dam. The Howson Dam is
an aging dam and bridge structure located on the Maitland River in the
former Town of Wingham.
Long term alternatives for the Howson Dam will be evaluated in
accordance with the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (EA)
process. The Class EA includes consideration of natural, social,
economic and cultural factors as part of the alternative evaluation
process.
Preliminary alternatives identified at this time include the following:
Alternative 1 — Rebuild dam and bridge structure and restore dam
headpond to former level.
Alternative 2 — Rehabilitate the existing dam and bridge. Maintain
water levels in headpond at current (lower) level.
Alternative 3 - Rehabilitate the existing dam and bridge. Restore water
levels in headpond to original (higher) level.
Alternative 4 - Decommission (remove) the dam.
Alternative 5 — Do nothing. Leave dam as is.
An initial Public Information Center (PIC) will be held on Thursday,
September 29, 2016 from 6 pm to 8 pm at the Municipal Offices in
Wingham. This initial PIC will be to receive initial public comment and
include a general review of dam history. The meeting will feature a
presentation on the Class EA process at 7 pm.
Public input is encouraged throughout the process. If you have any
immediate comments, or wish to have your name added to the project
mailing list, please contact the undersigned by September 29, 2016.
This Notice issued on September 13, 2016.
