Palmerston Marlins take gold in Winnipeg tourney
mamonswAt 19?
Gold -medal girls
The Palmerston Marlins U14 Girls squad fought hard for a berth in the Canadian National
Jamboree in Winnipeg last month and were able to capture a gold medal win in the Smitty's
division with a 7-0 mercy victory over the Manitoba Interlake Phillies. (Photo submitted)
The Palmerston Marlins U14 girls
qualified for a spot at the 2016
Canadian National Jamboree in
Winnipeg on Aug. 17-20, after
capturing bronze at the Provincial
Grands in Mississauga on July 30-
31.
The players worked hard at
gathering sponsorship before they
hit the road to Nationals, and
they would like to thank everyone
who contributed to their fund in
one way or another.
Once the team arrived in
Winnipeg, they headed to the
diamond to kick things off right
away against the very talented host
team: Smitty's Terminators. The
girls played hard and kept the
reigning champs down one run until
the very last inning, but came up
short in the end. Next up was the
Saskatoon Hustlers and Marlins
come out on top with a score of 4-3.
A big win
The Barrie Storm, featuring the local talent of Jessica
Johnston of Brussels, brought home a gold medal in the B
Division of the Canadian Championship in Montreal last
month. Johnston, in the centre of the above photo, pitched
two innings of the team's first game but, due to injury, spent
the rest of tournament playing in the field. (Photos submitted)
Opening ceremonies took place
after their games on Wednesday.
Each team was piped in and players
recited the athletes' pledge and then
"0' Canada" was played and the
ceremonial first pitch was thrown
out.
It was a tough day on the diamond
for the Marlins on their second day
of the tournament, with a couple of
losses to some very tight teams: The
Victoria Devils and Manitoba
Thunder. After round-robin play, the
Palmerston Marlins shifted into the
Smitty's Terminators division.
Hitting the diamond on day three
to start pool play, they faced off
against Manitoba Phillies with a 6-3
win and then a great game, that had
lots of action against another
Manitoba team, Central Energy, with
a win of 8-7. The Marlins were
sitting number one in their division,
meaning they would square
off against the Phillies one more
time.
On day three, the Palmerston
Marlins U14 girls did a little
sightseeing and headed to 'The
Forks' and toured the market and
took in the boat tour and learned a
little more about the city they were
calling home for a few days.
Then, it was back to the John
Blumberg Softball Complex for final
game of the tournament.
The Marlins struck early and never
looked back. They took the gold
medal in the Smitty's division with a
7-0 mercy victory over the Manitoba
Interlake Phillies.

All of the girls have worked very
hard since training started in January
and have definitely learned a great
deal. Teaching the girls along the
way are coaches Pat Ash, Bruce
Johnston, Melissa Lee and Ryan
Martin. The players would like to
thank all them for their time and
energy put into the season.
The Palmerston Marlin Novice
girls would also like to thank
everyone who has been a part of
their journey this season. The
support means a great deal.
Tigers claim silver
medal HCFL finish
The Wingham Hitmen are the
Huron County Fastball League
champions after defeating the
Brussels Tigers in back-to-back
games over the weekend.
The double -elimination
tournament, which was hosted by
the Wroxeter Royals, saw the Tigers
reach the finals undefeated, however
they were unable to best Wingham
who earned a 2-1 win and an 8-1
win on Sunday.
Wingham had won their way to
the championship with a 5-1 win
over Sebringville Jr. Sting earlier in
the day after Brussels blanked the

Sebringville bested Belmore
Stingers 10-0 to make their way to
the semi-final game. Belmore
ousted the Milverton AW
Millwrights 7-6.
On Saturday, Sebringville
eliminated the Fullarton A's in a 12-

Sebringville eliminated the

Earlier that day, Goderich
eliminated Mitchell 8-0, Walton

Royals 17-10 and Sebringville
made the Tavistock Athletics
the first elimination of the
tournament with a 16-4 win.
Brussels bested Goderich 10-0,
Belmore beat Milverton 9-2 and
Goderich trumped Wroxeter 10-5.
The tournament started on Friday
with four games in which Fullarton
beat Sebringville 6-5, Wingham
beat Walton 4-3, Sebringville bested
