Miners thanks locals for Beyond Borders support
Quite the experience
Jessica Miners, third from left, recently returned from a Beyond Borders mission trip to the
Ukraine and she says she wouldn't have been able to help as many people as she did if it
weren't for the generosity of the Brussels and Bluevale communities. (Photo submitted)

It was a good first week of getting
back to routine and back to school.
A reminder to drivers that flashing
red lights mean stop. There were a
couple of reports of vehicles going
through flashing lights during the
first week, so let's everyone
remember to watch for children and
watch for the flashing lights.
Returning from a trip to the U.S.
were Don and Pat Dalton and friends
Jim and Betty Ross. They went to
Massachusetts and to Plymouth
Rock where they saw a replica of the
Mayflower. They travelled to the end
of Cap Cod but because of bad
weather, there were no boat
crossings to Martha's Vineyard.
They went on to Boston and then to
Portland, Maine through the
beautiful scenery, but commented
that there wasn't much farmland to
see. They went to North Conway,
New Hampshire and then to Lake
Placid. They checked out the
Olympic sites and went up to the top
of the ski jump. Wow! They had a

Our condolences to the family of
Campbell Wey. He will be missed by
his children Doug and Debbie and
their families. A private family
service was held. It was always a
pleasure to visit with Campbell
when he was still able to attend
Duff's Church. We would sit in the
back pew and share the soft chair
cushion he had on the pew. A very
nice man and he will be missed by
all.
Our condolences to the family of
Fran Rose. She will be missed by
her children Darwin and Tammy and
their families. Fran was a very quiet
lady and will be missed by her
extended Cardiff and Rose families.

THE EDITOR,
I would like to thank the Brussels
Lions Club, the Brussels Optimist
Club and the Brussels and Bluevale
communities for their generosity and
support towards my Beyond Borders
placement this summer in Ternopil,
Ukraine.
This experience was truly an
opportunity of a lifetime! I worked
at Petryky Internat with orphaned
girls with various physical and
mental disabilities. They ranged in
age from six to 25. I started my
placement by attending the local
university to study the language and
culture of Ukraine. I spent three
weeks learning as much as I could
before beginning my placement at
the Internat.
Petryky Internat (Orphanage) was
home to 100 girls while I was there.
These girls come from all over the
country as well as neighbouring
countries. My role there was to
provide programming activities over
the course of their summer as the
orphanage does not provide
programming once school is
finished for the year.
I had an amazing time working
with these girls over the summer. We
celebrated Canada Day with the girls
and introduced them to Canadian
snacks like s'mores! Walks to the
park and ferry rides were favourite
day trips we did with the girls.
Dancing, egg hunts, soccer, Lego
projects and camping are just a few
activities we did with the girls this
summer. They loved every minute of
it and without the support of the
local communities and organizations
I would not have been able to bring
an exciting and eventful summer to
my Ukrainian sisters!
Sincerely,
Jessica Miners, Bluevale.
