Dog park fundraising underway
On Tuesday night, Auburn
resident Jacqui Laporte was
scheduled to pitch the idea of a dog
park for the community to Central
Huron Council.
In Laporte's presentation, she told
councillors that the park would be an
off -leash, fenced area where dogs
could run freely in a community
setting. This concept is not to be
confused with a kennel or a long-
term housing solution where
animals are left unattended.
Laporte estimates that there are 45
dogs within the village of Auburn, a
relatively small community. In her
presentation, she said there would be
many positives associated with a dog
park in the village, but urged that dog
owners would have to exercise good
practices — cleaning up after their
dogs and ensuring their dogs are
spayed or neutered as well as
vaccinated in order to use the park.
Laporte suggested that the park
could be located near the Auburn
Hall, behind the village's baseball
diamond, and consist of a fenced
area with two dog runs (one for
smaller dogs and the other for larger
dogs) and a double gate for safety.
She also suggested that the park
should include a bag dispenser and a
garbage can to manage waste and
that it should be surrounded by
native trees and shrubs to add
aesthetic value to the site.
A second option for the site would
be beside the village's basketball
court, although she said the area is
historically wet and wouldn't be
ideal for the park.
Fundraising for the park is already
underway according to Laporte. She
says there are existing donations, as
well as a request to the Auburn
Lions Club. She also said that she
will be making the same
presentation to North Huron and
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
Councils, as the three municipalities
share the village.
Laporte also said that a request has
been made of the Auburn
Horticultural Society for a donation
of native trees, as well as a request
of the Maitland Valley Conservation
Authority for shrubs.
As far as in-kind services, Laporte
hopes that one of the municipalities
can help with the installation of a
dog park sign, emptying the garbage
can on a regular basis and the
planting of the trees and shrubs.
Between fencing, posts, gates and
a sign, cost estimates for the park
range between $2,685 and $2,985,
which does not include costs for
taxes, hardware, cement or labour.

the proposal, check The Citizen
