From the Minister's Study Summer's over, back to work says Versteeg By Pastor Andrew Versteeg Brussels Community Bible Chapel The summer holidays are almost past and soon it will be back to school again. On Sunday morning it was good to see our Sunday school class full again. Throughout the summer there were enough Sundays when only half of the class was present; the others were away camping, visiting, etc. When I mentioned to the class that full attendance again is an indication that summer is winding down, there were not a lot of cheerful faces; mostly downcast looks and muffled groans. The thought of books, assignments, early mornings and deadlines does not make a lot of school children happy. School means work. Studying, completing papers and writing tests is not an easy task. We all know that learning requires effort, and yet those of us who have completed our schooling will testify that it is all very worthwhile. Where would we be if we could not read or write? Many of our jobs require training or maybe post- secondary education and we are thankful that we have those opportunities. We know that it has taken some effort, and that is generally the way it always is. Unfortunately it is the required effort to study and learn that often discourages us and causes us to groan a bit when it is time to take up the books again. We like the break of summer and we sometimes wish life could always be like that. We need to be wise and see the long term benefits of learning and apply it to ourselves now. It is like this at church as well. Summer is a time that some of our ministries take a break. There are programs for the children, the teens and the adults that are opportunities to learn about God. The church exists to spread the knowledge of God in the world and so we teach God's word. Just like learning math or science, learning about God takes effort. We need to prioritize some time, maybe attend some classes and do some reading and memorizing. What are the benefits of learning about God? There are many, but the best way to understand this is to see what happens when we neglect to know about Him. About 700 B.C. God sent the prophet Hosea to the Israelite people to warn them about their departure from the knowledge of God. Their lack of knowledge led directly to the breakdown of social order. There is swearing, deception, murder, stealing and adultery. There is violence, so that bloodshed follows bloodshed. Therefore the land mourns, and everyone who lives in it languishes. ... My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge" (Hosea 4:1 - 6). Without the knowledge of God, evil increased and life in that land became miserable. Violence and insecurity ruled the day. Because the people ceased to know God and obey Him, He turned His blessings away from them and He was against them instead of for them. Knowing God and obeying His revealed will leads to many blessings for our society. We need to remember that this has to start with us as individuals. We need to make `knowing God' a priority, and there are many opportunities to do this in our local churches, starting again this September. God promises however, that the greatest blessing will be for our souls. The majority of society may not take God seriously, but if you do, you will be blessed. In short you will find life with God that begins now and extends beyond the grave and into eternity. John 17:3 says, "This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent." Now is the time to know God. It will take some effort, but the return for your life and soul will be far greater than the investment. JLtlt re :°l'l'll'ite(I -JCS olit it Wo154l ) SUNDAYS Morning Service 10:00 am Evening Service 7:30 pm L BLYTH CHRISTIAN REFORMED CHURCH Minister: Pastor Gary van Leeuwen Hwy. 4, Blyth www.blythcrc.ca 519-523-4743 eiva.¢elc eaoiurc2%utcy vale &rod You're Invited sr to come worship with us Sunday, September 4 Brussels Business & Cultural Centre at 10:30 a.m. and at various homes at 6:30 p.m. from July 3 to Sept. 4 Sunday School for children 4 to 12 years of age at 9:30 a.m. Childcare provided for infants and preschoolers during the sermon.
