Trespassing charges
filed at NH meeting
Two individuals have been
arrested for trespassing after they
refused to follow bylaws set out by
North Huron Township Council.
On Aug. 22, council's regular
meeting started the same way its
previous two had, with members of
the gallery refusing to put away
recording devices, specifically
cameras.
The individuals had attended
meetings in the past and had been
escorted out by police for refusing to
follow the township's procedural
bylaw which prohibits the use of
recording devices.
At the Aug. 22 meeting, however,
the men refused to put away their
cameras as was requested by Reeve
Neil Vincent. They were informed
by a Wingham police officer that by
failing to follow the bylaw, they
were considered to be trespassing.
While all three individuals left,
two were arrested under the
Trespass to Property Act for
engaging in a prohibited activity
according to Wingham Police. The
individuals were arrested, given
offense notices, and immediately
released.
After the individuals were
escorted from the meeting, Vincent
explained that council meetings are
intended for councillors and staff
and that others are invited for
transparency's sake.
"Unless an individual is a
deputation or recognized by the
chair, they are not allowed to partake
in the discussion of the meeting," he
said prior to reconvening the
meeting.
During two previous council
meetings, the same situation had
played out with individuals
attending with recording devices
in contravention of the above
bylaw.
It was explained that, as the
township had found a suitable means
to broadcast council meetings,
recording devices were no longer
allowed in the chambers. The
recordings of the meetings are
uploaded and made available
through YouTube.
While police officers have
attended previous meetings to deal
with the situation, arrests have not
been made until this most recent
event.
