Quite an achievement

There are a pair of running shoes
that sit in my Auburn office all year
long waiting for this one particular
day in the year when I put them on
for about an hour.
On the last Sunday of every
August around noon I reach for
these old worn running shoes. You
see, the last Sunday in August is
Baptism Sunday at Huron Chapel.
After the morning service we head
down to the Maitland River. We
don't sprinkle people or use a tank
in the church, instead we go for it
`Bible style' and get right out in the
river to baptize people.
Baptism is an outward act of a
person declaring publicly what
Jesus has done in their lives. This
year the Scott family at the Auburn
Riverside Retreat hosted our
baptismal service. A good crowd
gathered along the river where six
young people were baptized. Each
one of these took the microphone
and shared with those standing
along the shore what Jesus meant to
them and why they were wanting to
be baptized. One of the teens had a
challenging life growing up in a
troubled home. He came to a family
in our church through foster care
and over time accepted Christ into
his life. He shared how much better
life is now with God in it.
A 21 -year-old man being baptized
was almost killed a year and half
ago in a car accident. He had to be
airlifted to London hospital and is
still recovering from the accident.
Being baptized was a way of telling
others and reminding himself what
really mattered and what was really
important in life. A 10 -year-old boy
had written out a speech recalling
the day when he became a Christian
while riding with his Dad in his
truck. It was great to hear their
FROM AUBURN
stories and we were all encouraged.
When every one had said what they
wanted to share, we ventured out
into the river.
As each one was baptized and
came up out of the water they were
greeted by a roar of cheers and
applause from the shoreline. When
we were all done, we dried off, we
visited and eventually headed back
to our homes. I however went back
to my office, took off my `baptism
shoes' and placed them outside my
office door to dry off so they could
be ready again next year when I will
put them on for that exciting hour.
