From the Minister's Study Royall recounts lessons learned from mother BY MARK ROYALL HURON CHAPEL, AUBURN It is 6:21 a.m. I just woke up moments ago. I awoke from a dream about my mom where, in typical mom fashion, we had got her laughing so hard she couldn't speak. She would try but just spurts of words would make it out before she lost control again in fits of boisterous laughter with joyous tears streaming down her face. This morning as I awoke from this dream 1 was remembering another dream I had about mom. It was about Five generations Recently a local family had cause to mark an occasion when five generations of the same family all found themselves under the same roof. The occasion was Brandy Gregory's family bridal shower held in Walton. It was one of those dreams where everything seems so real that you honestly feel as if it is actually happening. And the thing is, because it seems real, your emotions and body react accordingly even when you are asleep. In this dream I dreamt mom had died and I was experiencing such deep sorrow over her death. More than that, I was overwhelmed with regret for living so far away and missing out on being with mom in the final years and moments of her life. The emotions I felt in this dream were intense. When I woke up I was so relieved it was only a dream. However, I knew the reality of my mother's death was real and when she did die, I didn't want to feel the regret and torment I had experienced in my dream. So Glenda and I felt it was time to move back here to Ontario to be closer to our parents and our family. My father had died when I was just seven years old so I grew up with my sister and mom. We were the three amigos. We were very close. We loved each other, we played together and yes, we laughed a lot together. The dream became reality when one month and two days ago today, my mom died. My sister Anne and I were 011 either side of her as she laid in bed. Anne was holding her hand, my hand was on her back. We told her over and over again how much we loved her. We thanked her over and over again for the great job she did raising us. I have called it a privilege being with mom in these final moments, not because it was easy or fun — it wasn't — but because I could be there for her and with her as she was there and with Anne and me so many times.
