The Citizen
The Brussels Squirt baseball team
recently returned home from a very
successful provincial year-end
tournament earlier this month.
The tournament, which was held
in Springbrook, north of Belleville,
started Aug. 13 and the team
couldn't manage a win when they
took on Napanee.
Coach Mark Pennington said the
team's series of wins on the way to
the championship started as a result
of an event during that first loss.
"That loss sent us on to the long
road back to the finals," he said. "We
were losing the game fairly badly,
and the pitcher [Christopher
Pennington] was hit by a line drive,
sending him to the hospital in an
ambulance."
Pennington explained the turn of
events rallied the team, which earned
several runs but couldn't overcome
Napanee, losing 10-7.
Christopher would return to help
the team in the semi-finals, however
the team ended up playing four more
games, some back-to-back to get to
there.
"We started against Stouffville and
Tri -County Squirts win gold
earned a 15-0 win there with Brett
McCutcheon pitching on Saturday,"
Pennington said. "After that,
however, rain delayed everything
and we went to Sunday for our next
game"
The team played Westport and
earned a 4-2 win, then came up
against Napanee again, earning a 7-4
win and finally beat New Hamburg
4-0 in the semi-finals.
"The host Springbrook was the
final team, and we had to beat them
twice in order to win gold because it
was double elimination," Pennington
explained.
Unfortunately, the team wasn't
able to rally again, losing 10-3 in the
final and clinching the silver medal
spot, however, Pennington said no
one was unhappy with the result.
"There was no disappointment
there," he said. "Everyone did
very well."
