What a night
The Tragically Hip ended their current tour, which could very well be their last, in Kingston on
Saturday with a concert that was seen by millions of people on television, on the internet and
at local gatherings. The Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre was home to one such
gathering, welcoming locals to the centre to watch the show and raise money for needed
renovations to the Brussels Pool. When all the funds were counted, $2,200 was raised for the
project that night. From left: Brian Keller of the Brussels Lions, Gary Clark of the Brussels
Ministerial, Lisa Glanville of the Brussels Legion, Jason Crawford of the Brussels Optimists,

Committee. (Vicky Bremner photo)
At the Branch
Comrades kept busy
with local events
By Jo -Ann McDonald
There were lots of activities to
keep the Comrades busy this past
week at the Brussels Legion Branch.
It started with members of the
Branch going to the Walton
TransCan to help with Bingo.
Comrades Deb, Ross, Andy
Overholt, Catrina Josling, Sandra
Josling and Judy Lee helped run the
well attended event for the members
of motocross families.
There was a good turnout of
players for the Saturday afternoon
euchre. Winners were: first, John
Brown and Cathy MacDonald, 81;
second, Hazel McGonigle and Janet
Davies, 80; third, Mary Jane and
Agnes, 73; lone hands, Shirley and
Nancy, eight and low, Fannie
Somers and Viola Adams, 44.

Do you know any 90 -year-old man
who is able to celebrate that birthday
in the house where he was born?
Family and friends spent Sunday
afternoon with Emerson Mitchell as
his life and time were reviewed and
celebrated. Flowers and food in a
tent and a smiling birthday boy
made for a pretty fine party.
The Brussels pool was the
recipient of the efforts of community
on Saturday night. The Olympics
and then the much -awaited
Tragically Hip concert live from
Kingston were fun to view in a
group. The size of the screen and the
sound were thanks to Gary Clark
and Optimist Club member Jason
Crawford.
The Recreation Board took
responsibility for the evening and it
went very well. Mery Bauer was the
boss of the evening, even if he
wasn't feeling well but he was ably
helped by Darby Alcorn. I'm sure no
other Hip concert had a bartender
right from England for the job. So
thanks Darby — you do good cleanup
too!
Lisa and Joan on chip detail were
kept busy once the smell of chips
and vinegar hit the tables. Fans aged
two to 85 were together to mark this
historic night and make the pool a
little better.
Smiling faces at the door greeted
the fans and the donation jar showed
that the community sees the pool as
important and a quick count of the
donations was $2,200. If you missed
the evening and would like to donate
see Abby or send a cheque to Huron
East.

Part of the Queen of the Furrow competition held at the Huron County Plowing Match, which
was held at the Fear family farm on Clegg Line this year, is the cake decorating event. Shown
being culinarily creative are contestants Natalie Fear, left, and Lexi Merner. (Shawn Loughlin photo)

donated six tickets for Sunday. So
interested folks signed up and when
numbers were chosen the six
winners were: Doug Bremner,
Jackie DeWitt, Jason Burkholder,
Jason Pennington, Ethan Burkholder
and Evan Ducharme. I'm sure they
enjoyed the day. For Doug it was a
reminder that he was one of the
racers when Chris first started the
track. Oh yes, the years fly by.
Jim Armstrong is getting older and
so the Culture Club and their
partners enjoyed a bountiful
breakfast at the Armstrong estate on
Monday to mark this occasion. If
Leanne and Leona are looking for a
new interest, they have our
recommendation as caterers.
The last flings of summer are in
progress as the air smells like
September and the kids are making
plans for school. So enjoy this time.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Morris and Grey Community Centre
had Comrades Lisa Glanville and
Joan Smith volunteering for the
Branch. They were cooking french
fries for a couple of hours for those
attending. The event was a
fundraiser for the pool.
The Sunday night dance had a
good crowd of just over 70 people
attend and enjoy the music of the
Country Versatiles.
