expression and therefore the
properties and behaviour of the cell.
In human terms, it suggests that
events in the lives of one's ancestors
may influence the lives of
descendants, even though they are
not conscious of those past events.
The artist says, "Last summer, I
came across archives of photographs
and film stills of my grandparents
from the 1920s. As I stared into the
pale imagery mauled by the decades,
I suffered a pang of nostalgia for a
time I never experienced."
The photographs triggered painful
memories from her own life
experiences and Montina hopes to
transform them into a means of
healing through her paintings. Her
subjects include alcoholism,
depression, anxiety and the past and
present trauma of our First Nations.
The public can now view Montina
Hussey's challenging exhibition in
the Bainton Gallery, Blyth Memorial
Hall, until Sept. 3 when it closes.
"Transfiguration: A Case Study on
Epigenetic Memory" is presented by
the Blyth Festival Art Gallery. It is
curated by Greg Sherwood and
sponsored by Joan Perrie.
The gallery is located next to the
Blyth Festival box office and is open
during box office hours. Admission
is free. For further information, call

A powerful journey
Montina Hussey, an artist who formerly studied at F.E. Madill School, opened her exhibit,
entitled "Transfiguration: A Case Study on Epigenetic Memory" on Friday night. She is seen
here with one of her creations, which is based on a photograph of her paternal grandfather, a
man she never met. The exhibit will be on display until early next month. (Vicky Bremner photo)
A former F.E. Madill school
student is now one of the featured
artists at the Blyth Festival Art
Gallery. Montina Hussey is a BFA
graduate of the Ontario College of
Art and Design and recently
completed her studies in Florence,
Italy on a study abroad program.
The exhibition, titled
"Transfiguration: a Case Study on
Epigenetic Memory", is sure to
intrigue visitors to the gallery.
Epigenetic memory is defined as a
set of modifications to DNA that
does not alter its sequence, and have
been inherited from the cell from
which it descends. Such
modifications can alter gene
Custom lily bred for 140th

The Friends of the Village of Blyth
are helping to mark next year's
140th anniversary of the village with
a specially -chosen day lily.
The lily, which has been named
the Belle of Blyth, pending approval
with the board that governs the
identification of lilies, was chosen
by the group earlier this year and
named by suggestion at a booth at
Streetfest late last month.
"This name was suggested
anonymously," group liaison to
North Huron Council Lissa
Kolkman said. "We had 15 to 20
suggestions and the committee
chose this one."
The flower, which is saffron with
burgundy colouring, is available for
purchase from the group for $15 per
bulb in limited quantities.
"We're still determining exactly
how many we're going to have
available," Kolkman said.
Currently, 25 of the flowers have
been ordered, however more are
available and still more may become
available next year, however
Kolkman said potential buyers
shouldn't wait.
"It's a limited supply for sure," she
said. "We're hoping to have more in
the spring"
The lily, which was chosen from
Mike Falconer's selection of lilies at
Falhaven Farm and Nursery, may
also just be the first one chosen for
the village as the Friends have
considered selecting another flower
in the future or even having one
specifically bred for the village,
however that takes a significant
investment.
The name Falconer may be
familiar to some horticulturally
inclined individuals as he has also
provided a specially -bred lily for
the coming 2017 International
Plowing Match to be held near
Walton and is working with the East
Wawanosh Reunion committee as
well.
Kolkman said the best way to get
in touch with the Friends of the
Village of Blyth group is through

The Belle of the ball
The Friends of the Village of Blyth, a group dedicated to
maintaining the gardens and green spaces in the village,
has selected the above day lily to be the feature flower of
the 140th anniversary of the village. While the flower has
been chosen for awhile, the group had to mull over a name
and, with the help of an anonymous suggestion, settled on
The Belle of Blyth. The name is pending approval from the
board that maintains a library of all lilies. (Photo submitted)
