(Shawn Loughlin photo) By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Twenty-one-year-old Patti Blake is the 2016/2017 Brussels Fall Fair Ambassador, coming out on top of the competition at the Brussels Legion Saturday night. Blake, the daughter of Molesworth's Greg and Marie Blake, impressed the judges with her speech and agricultural background to take home the crown. In an interview with The Citizen, Blake said she was surprised and shocked when she heard her name called as this year's winner. Blake triumphed over Erin McMahon, who was chosen as the competition's first runner-up, Regan Ryter, winner of the competition's Friendship Award, Raven Kenney and Laura Souch. Blake, who was sponsored by the Huronlea Auxiliary, has completed her diploma in agriculture at the University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus and is working full time at Wikkemaat Farms Inc. as a herd manager. She enjoys participating in the North Perth 4-H Beef Club and the Listowel 4-H Dairy Club. She also belongs to the Perth County Junior Farmers organization. Blake has a passion for showing cattle with her family at both the local and national levels and loves to play broomball in the winter with the Arctic Blaze team. While Blake says she feels she could have prepared more for the marathon of interviewing with judges and speaking in front of a packed house at the Legion, it was her public speech that came easy to her, she said. Blake said she was happy to spend the day with the other four contestants, whom she said were very friendly and that they all got along very well. As Ambassador for the Brussels #1 And We Still Try Harder Recent circulation figures show The Citizen has the highest circulation in the northern part of Huron County, #3 in the entire county. The Citizen Proudly Community -Owned Since 1985 Fall Fair, Blake looks forward to reconnecting with the Brussels community. Now living in Molesworth and after attending school outside of the community for several years, she said it was good to see people from Brussels again and she's looking forward to seeing much more of village residents. Outgoing Ambassador Tiffany Deitner also took the opportunity that night to address everyone for her farewell speech, which she wrote in the fashion of a poem. She thanked those involved in the program like Nicole Noble and Kabrina Bishop, saying that she had an excellent year representing the community. For the first time in the fair's history, Little Ambassador and Junior Ambassador awards were handed out. Contestants were asked to write a short essay on "Finding fun at the Brussels Fall Fair" and they were judged ahead of Saturday night by a panel that included Deitner, Mary Douma and Yvonne Knight. James Speer won the Little Ambassador competition and was joined by his brother Benjamin on the stage, as Benjamin won the Junior Ambassador competition. Both young men wrote their essays about showing lambs at the fair and filling the hours before they're called to show their animals with viewing farm equipment and playing in the corn box. The Brussels Fall Fair is scheduled for Sept. 20-21. For more information on the fair or on the Brussels Agricultural Society, visit brusselsfallfair.ca. A new era On Saturday night, the Brussels Agricultural Society ushered in a new era by naming a Little Ambassador and Junior Ambassador ahead of the Brussels Fall Fair. James Speer, left, and Benjamin Speer, right, were named Little and Junior Ambassador respectively. They are joined here by the 2016/2017 Ambassador Patti Blake, centre.
