The event, which routinely sees the tiny village become the centre of the motocross universe for the weekend, brings thousands of competitors and visitors to Walton Raceway and this year looks to be no different. Starting Wednesday, the weekend includes Cold Creek County and Jordan McIntosh performing during a special concert on Aug. 19 and will be topped off with the crowning of the 25th King of Walton on Aug. 21. Events include racing for competitors of all skill levels and all ages as well as some new attractions for the weekend. This year, the Canadian Grand National Pro Open will be hosted as part of the event on Sunday and is billed as the "cage match" of the motocross world. Organizers state the inaugural race will bring out the best of MX1 and MX2 pro motocrossers to go head to head for multiple awards and cash bonuses. Tickets are still available to the event as well as the rest of the races throughout the weekend. Over three inches of rain was reported around the area. Many times it came down in torrential downpours and then the sun would shine again, and in an hour another downpour would happen. Time will tell if it will help the crops recover from the drought conditions. It has been a week of sadness across our area this past week. Our condolences to the family of the late Kaye Duncan. She will be missed by her sons David and Larry and their families. Kaye will be remembered by many folks around the Brussels area and has spent her last years at the Blayhaven Home in Collingwood. A time of memories was shared at Melville Presbyterian Church. Our sympathies are extended to John and Mary Lou Driscoll on the passing of brother Ron Driscoll. Ron will be missed by his children Shelley and Scott and their families Our condolences to all. Our very special friend, Marg Bennett passed away this past week. She will be missed by her husband Ross and children Nanci and Peter and their families. She was a wonderful lady and had been a special friend of mine for over 30 years. We would have a great banter weekly and I referred to her as "Mother Margaret' regularly. We worked together at Duff's United Church and the Brussels Legion. She canvassed for Heart and Stroke for my area for many years and many times gave fresh vegetables to me from the garden. "Ross grew too many anyways" she would say. I will miss her and her warm smile, her smart remarks and her tasty Christmas treats. Our condolences to Ross and family. Returning from a great trip to the East Coast are Murray and MaryAnn Bone. They flew to the Maritimes and rented a car. They spent much of the time in Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island. They had a great visit with Archie McDonald and Rosie while on their tour of the Cabot Trail. The week flew by but they recommend to everyone to see the East Coast. Neil McDonald is home from Vancouver for another week's holiday. He is not used to such humidity. He attended both of the funerals for former Walton residents while here. Walton Hall was busy on the weekend with two Blyth Festival dinners. On Friday evening a very small crowd of 17 people enjoyed the roast beef dinner served by Judy Lee, Judy Emmrich, Jo -Ann McDonald and Jane Zwep. Saturday evening there was a much bigger crowd of 57 people who enjoyed the meal of roast beef in a much hotter building. Cooking and serving the meal were Judy Lee, Judy Emmrich, Barb Durrell, Karen Hoegy and Jo- Ann McDonald. The Hall Board appreciates the help of the community members to keep the hall up and running. The next event at the hall will be a shower for the brides-to-be Tina and sister Trish McClure. Planning and decorating for the community shower on the Aug. 24 is being handled by Heidi McClure and Gloria Wilbee. - REPRINTS OF PHOTOS taken by Citizen photographers are available to purchase. They went to Maelstrom Winery outside of Clinton for a tour of the winery and orchards to learn about wine making. They had a taste of some of their products.
