A NOTE FROM BETTY

We've had our taste of the tropics
and for many enough is enough.
Weatherwise this has been a weird
summer with sky-high temperatures
INW
and lots of humidity, with little relief
on many days. So for kids and
folks right by the water, it's been
lovely, for others a break is
anticipated.
The Olympics have been a
pleasure to watch. The
determination and skill of the
Canadian team is just awesome. To
do your very best and be in a race
with others who match your level of
talent is breathtaking. Events where
the numbers indicate that the top
three won by fractions of a second
and the remaining competitors were
less than a minute behind, takes a bit
to comprehend. The skill, the bodies,
the tension make for a great break
from the heat outside. The stories of
the athletes make the events even
better getting a glimpse into the
work and world that the athletes live
and the role family and coaches play
to the end. As I write this we have
celebrated 12 medals for Canada.
Hurrah!
We were away last week and on
return was caught up on the events in
our community. Birth and death are
the bookends of our life. It's the days
in between that count and what we
do with them that signifies our life.
Toe -tapping tunes
A small but enthusiastic crowd of music fans braced themselves for the high temperatures on
Aug. 12 to see and hear Glen Hodgins busting out some great music as part of the Brussels
Farmers' Market weekly live music. (Denny Scott photo)
At the Branch
Blake wins ambassador contest
By Jo -Ann McDonald
It has been a week of sadness at
the Brussels Legion Branch with the
news of the passing of Comrade
Marg Bennett. She will be missed by
her husband Ross and children
Nanci and Peter and their families
and by the Brussels Legion family.
Marg was a dedicated member for
41 years and supported and believed
in the importance of the work of the
Legion. She was the Branch
treasurer for 15 years and
volunteered on many committees
including Poppy, Veterans'
Comforts, Fundraising and as
Branch auditor for Poppy and
Nevada after her term of being
treasurer. She was made a Life
member in 1996 and also received
the Meritorious Service Medal
(MSM), the highest award for a
member of the Royal Canadian
Legion. She continued her support in
her "golden" years by co-chairing
the euchre committee for 10 years.
She was humorous and quick-witted,
bossy and feisty, but generous and
kind of heart to all. She will be
missed by many.
The Branch conducted a Legion
service on Saturday evening with 26
Comrades in attendance. The branch
extends its sympathies to the
Bennett family.
The funeral for Marg was held on
Sunday and the reception followed
at the Brussels Legion Branch. The
ladies helping included the morning
setup crew of Lisa Glanville, Sandra
Josling, Jean Davidson, Janet
Haertel and Daisy Wong Schmidt.
The serving crew were Judy Lee, Jo-
Ann McDonald, Judy Emmrich
and Betty McCallum in the
afternoon.
The Branch was busy with a
funeral luncheon on Saturday
afternoon at the arena for the late
Philip Blake. The prep crew was
busy on Friday at the Legion with
John Lowe, Lisa Glanville and Joan
Smith preparing the necessary items.
The Saturday morning crew
involved moving to the arena, setup
and making the lunch. A great bunch
helped including, Jo -Ann
McDonald, Lisa, Joan, Cecil Moore,
Rick McDonald, Mabel Glanville,
Sharon Robbins, Dianne Huether

and Judy Lee. The next crew arrived
to help serve and they included Jo-
Ann, Judy, Sharon Stephenson, Don
Chesher, Deb Cann, Deb Ross and
Brenda Linton. Everyone did a good
job and thanks to the members of the
community who also volunteered to
help over the weekend.
The Brussels Fall Fair
Ambassador event was held at the
Brussels Legion on Saturday. The
Ambassador committee members
did a fantastic job as usual and
congratulations to the five
contestants for a great job. We hope
they enjoyed their experience and
congrats to Raven Kenney,
sponsored by the Brussels Legion,
for a good job. The meal was
prepared by Sandra Josling, Catrina
Josling and Mary Bradshaw and was
enjoyed by all.
Congrats to winners Patti Blake,
Ambassador and James Speer, Little
Ambassador and Ben Speer, Junior
Ambassador.

Memories are what we leave with
family and friends. So in the weeks
to come stories will be told, laughs
will be shared and tears shed for Phil
Blake, Bill VanNes and Marg
Bennett. Grief shared is the only
way it's bearable. So share your
memories, tell the stories and shed
the tears, life will go on.
Marten River in the Temagami
district was our campsite last week.
A nice wide river (logging history)
just steps away from our spot, made
the hot days good. A kayak up the
river made things nice and having
Jill examine water lilies, stones and
chipmunks brought joy. A few steps
to the swimming area made multiple
swims a good thing. A sudden
downpour one day while we were
swimming brought back memories
of swimming at the Bluevale Dam
with the brothers. Seeing the
raindrops dance on the water and the
images of drops on the tension of the
water was a timestopper.
Nature is a wonder and all we have
to do is stop and really see it. Jill
spent her other moments trying to
convince me that I needed a cell
phone, a dishwasher and a dog, so
we had several interesting
discussions — she's nine, going on
20.
The Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre will be a busy
spot on Saturday night as the
history -making event Tragically Hip
last concert is celebrated on the
walls of the auditorium. The Rec
Board and members of our
community have the permission of
the CBC and the band to make this
community evening happen. So even
if this music is not your style, pop in
and donate to the future of our
community and celebrate the fact we
have a pool and that it needs
to be supported.
