North Huron takes on cemetery shed repairs
North Huron Township Council is
happy the Blyth Legion Branch 420
wishes to contribute to the upkeep of
the Blyth Union Cemetery, however,
as the site is municipally owned, the
municipality can't allow the Legion
to undertake repairs on its own.
Crystal Taylor, First Vice -
President of the Branch, wrote a
letter to council stating that the roof
of the work shed at Blyth Union
Cemetery is in need of repairs and
that the Legion has a trust fund set
up for the cemetery. According to
the Legion's preferred contractor,
Dave Werkema from North Huron
Construction, the repairs should cost
$2,000.
Werkema, according to Taylor's
letter, stated the frame of the
structure is in good condition,
however the chimney needs to be
replaced and the facia, soffit and
trough should be replaced.
Council was happy to have the
Legion's support, however they were
concerned about setting a precedent.
Deputy -Reeve James Campbell
said agreeing to repairs might be
"setting the township up" to
agreeing with future requests.
Director of Public Services Jeff
Molenhuis stated that, as the
structure is a memorial asset, a
report should be drafted regarding
the issue.
Chief Administrative Officer
Sharon Chambers agreed, and stated
that as the property is a municipal
one, the proper policy for
procurement of a contractor to affect
the repairs would need to be
followed.
"We have to respond to the letter
and say we can accept the money as
a donation," she said, "however, we
have to follow internal policies and
procedures for the work"
Councillor Brock Vodden agreed,
stating the advantage of using such
procedures is to "make sure the job
is done correctly for permanence."
A report will be brought to council
on the status of the structure at a
future meeting.
