A big win

Provincial Women's Softball Association Provincial Grand Championships over the weekend

Johnston, Marlins
earn chance at
provincial games
The Palmerston Marlins Bantam
team has trained and played hard
over the past 10 months in
preparation for the Tier 1 U16
Provincial Woman's Softball Grand
Championships in Kitchener July
28-31. The tournament hosted 16 of
the most elite teams in Ontario
including Guelph, Waterloo (2),
Byron, Port Perry, Halton,
Brampton, Mississauga (2) Barrie
(2), Oakville, Amherstburg, The
Revolution, Whitby and the
Palmerston Marlins which includes
Brussels' Jessica Johnston.
The weekend was full of exciting
and intense games with amazing
performances by all the athletes.
Battling the scorching heat and
completing nine full games in two -
and -a -half days the Marlins captured
seventh place securing them a
spot at the 2016 Ontario
Summer Games in Mississauga
Aug. 11-14.
Only the top 10 Tier 1 bantam
teams are eligible for this chance of
a lifetime. The team is ecstatic to be
representing our area and
community at this prestigious
Olympic -type event showcasing
over 4,000 of the top athletes in 32
individual and team sports in the
province. This will be the largest
Summer Games in history. The team
wants to thank their community,
coaches, friends and mostly their
families for their support over the
years, this season and in the next
week during this truly amazing
experience. We hope to make you all
proud!
Novice Marlins get bronze at Grand Championships
Over the weekend of July 29-31,
the Palmerston Marlins U14 Novice
Girls fast pitch team competed in the
Provincial Women's Softball
Association (PWSA) Provincial
Grand Championships in
Mississauga. The Marlins novice
team is comprised of 13- and 14 -
year -old girls from a variety of
communities in midwestern Ontario
such as Durham, Mount Forest,
Drayton, Palmerston, and Wingham,
including Brussels' resident Jordyn
Johnston.
The sting of defeat
The Blyth U18 Girls Team were edged out by
their
rivals
from Clinton last week when the two faced off in Blyth. Blyth
fought hard, but Clinton managed a 5-3 win in the end.
Blyth started their year-end tournament last night with a
quarter -final rematch against Clinton at Central Huron

The girls battled hard all weekend
and as a result managed to win
bronze with a 6-3 win over Halton
Hills. With the win the team secured
a spot representing Ontario at the
Canadian Fast Pitch Jamboree Aug.
17-21 in Winnipeg. At the event the
girls will have the opportunity to
play against the top U14 Novice fast
pitch teams from British Columbia,
Alberta, Saskatchewan and
Manitoba.
To help offset the last minute
travel and accommodations costs,
the team has also created a
GoFundMe page for fans that are
interested in donating to the team.

Fastball scores hit new highs

High scores continue to pop up in
Huron County Fastball League
action as the league barrels towards
its final scheduled season games at
the end of this month.
The Fullarton A's hosted and
bested the Wingham Hitmen 8-2 on
Aug. 7. Unfortunately, earlier that
day, the home field advantage didn't
work for the Milverton AW
Millwrights who were in turn beat
by the Hitmen 10-0.
Also on Aug. 7, the Belmore
Stingers hosted the Goderich
Grizzlies and came out with an 8-1
win.
On Aug. 5, the sole game saw
Belmore edge out the Brussels
Tigers 6-5.
Four teams saw action on Aug. 4
as Fullarton visited Milverton and
came away with a 9-0 win and the
Sebringville Jr. Sting visited
Walton and went home with a
9-6 win.
On Aug. 3, Brussels travelled to
Sebringville and came away with an
11-6 win.
In one of the highest -scoring
games of the year, Fullarton visited
Goderich on Aug. 2 and triumphed
over the Grizzlies 20-10.
On July 28, Belmore hosted the
Walton Brewers and earned a 5-1
win while Milverton hosted
Goderich and earned a 10-5 win.
July 27 marked two good home
games where Brussels hosted and
beat Fullarton 8-5 and Sebringville
welcomed Milverton, handing them
a 14-3 defeat.
On July 26, Tavistock beat
Belmore 6-4, Goderich triumphed
over Wroxeter 11-7 and Fullarton
won a 7-2 win over Walton.
On July 25, the Mitchell Jr. Mets
welcomed Sebringville and edged
them out 4-3.
July 24, Wingham notched
a big 9-1 win over visiting
Mitchell.
On Friday, July 22, Milverton
triumphed over Wroxeter 14-2 who
had lost, on July 20, 12-2 to
Mitchell.
Also on July 20, Fullarton bested
Sebringville 9-2.
On July 19, three games were
played seeing Milverton beat
hometown Tavistock 12-8, Goderich
beating the visiting Belmore
Stingers 4-2 and Wingham earning a
convincing 12-2 victory over
Walton.
