Local shoot games invite new players Getting into character Prior to the world premiere of his one-man show, The Last Donnelly Standing, Blyth Festival Artistic Director Gil Garratt can be seen getting into his character of Robert Donnelly by riding around downtown Blyth on a horse. (Shawn Loughlin photo) Our sympathy is extended to Lloyd and Marie Machan and family in the death of their son Kenneth Machan, who passed away this past week. Sympathy is also extended to Tom and Cheryl Cronin and family in the death of Tom's brother Jim Cronin, Walkerton who passed away this past week. Happy Anniversary to Larry and Myrtle Badley who celebrated their Church catering committee seeks help Greeting worshippers at Blyth United Church on Food Bank Sunday, Aug. 7 were Terry Richmond and Marilyn Craig. Ushering were David Onn and Donna Moore. Marilyn Scott was pianist and Katie Dockstader, choir director. Lorie Falconer ran the power point. Barb Richmond welcomed everyone to church on such a beautiful day. A special welcome was extended to those who were visiting and attending the Bonanza Weekend at the Blyth Festival. The flower arrangements were from the funeral of Kenneth Machan. Barb drew everyone's attention to the announcements printed in the bulletin with special attention to the catering coming up on Aug. 19. The ladies would welcome any help in preparing the food to helping the day of the catering. The catering committee is also looking for donations of apples for making pies. Barb lit the Christ candle on the altar table. The first hymn was "Lord Prepare Me to be a Sanctuary." The opening prayer was said responsively with sign language in the response. Rev. Gary Clark invited everyone to greet one another by saying their first name. The next hymn was "Fight the Good Fight." The scripture lesson was from Luke 12: 4-7, 13-21. The choir, FREE 2016 Citizen Phone Books are available at our offices in Blyth and Brussels The Citizen 413 Queen St., Blyth 541 Turnberry St., Brussels under the direction of Katie Dockstader, sang the anthem "For the Beauty of the Earth." Rev. Clark's message to the congregation was "Food for the Soul — The Last Donnelly Standing." Rev. Clark had a drum and said that the skin on the drum needed to be tight in order for the drum to sound right. If the skin is too loose the drum makes a deadened sound. God wants us to be like the drum with a tight tension. Robert Donnelly would not let himself be bullied. Donnelly bought a house in town and said good morning to everyone passing by. He was a work horse and had no room for God. Donnelly was like the foolish farmer in the scripture. He wondered what he was going to do with all his wealth. He was all about himself. The scriptures are asking us to reflect on our lives. We are the rich farmer and we will be wise and know the need for forgiveness. We are not prefect. We need to put God in our lives. The hymn "Just As I Am" was sung followed by a "Minute for Missions," the receiving of the offering, the offertory response, "Your Work, 0 God Needs Many Hands," the offertory prayer, the prayers for the people, silent prayers and the singing of the Lord's Prayer. The last hymn "Where Cross the Crowded Ways of Life" was followed by the benediction and the singing of "God Be With You till We meet Again". Everyone was invited to stay for coffee and fellowship. Garden group to become official By Denny Scott The Citizen The Friends of the Village of Blyth's relationship with North Huron Township is set to be made official at council's Aug. 22 meeting. A memorandum of understanding between the group, which will be a non -township committee and volunteer group, and the township included responsibilities for the Friends of the Village as well as formal documents for volunteers and listed the benefits from being associated with the municipality. The document was presented during council's Aug. 2 meeting. According to the document, the group's major aims are going to be to assist and support the gardens and plantings in Blyth, promote planting in parks and natural environments and raise funds for projects outside of the North Huron budget for parks. The three-page memorandum includes waiver forms that Morning devotion (James Alexander, "My Brother's Keeper" 1838) "Let us fix our eyes on Jesus!" Hebrews 12:2. The habit of early rising is surely a friend to the soul. If it is the best time for study, it is also the best time for devotion. When prayer and praise are neglected in the morning, they are commonly neglected all day. If you let the world get the start of your soul in the morning, you will seldom overtake it all day. Morning devotion... sweetens every succeeding hour, pours a balm on the conscience, gives a pleasant savour to business, locks the door against wicked thoughts, furnishes matter for pious reflection all the day. It is better to go from prayer to business --than from business to prayer. Fellowship with God prepares for fellowship with our fellow creatures -- and for every event, whether pleasing or painful. A Grace Gem Submitted by: Immanuel United Reformed Church, Listowel, ON 519-291-1956 volunteers and, in the case of minors, their parents, need to sign to become part of the group.
