One big project
The Brussels and District Horticultural Society dug deep to fund a beautification project in
front of the Brussels Library earlier this month. The 55 -member group spent $2,500 on two
planters and two benches to help beautify the space. President Debbie Seili says the group
focused on longevity with the project, choosing concrete planters over wood and purchasing
benches that come with a 50 -year warranty. The planters themselves are perennial canis
plants while the rest can be replaced annually to match special events like the red and white
flowers planned for next year's celebration of Canada's 150th birthday. Plaques are going to
be placed to commemorate the project. From left: Soon-to-be group member Gary Clark,

Tragically Hip to benefit pool
By Shawn Loughlin
The Citizen
Gary Clark, Minister at the Blyth
and Brussels United Churches, has
organized a very Canadian
fundraiser for the Brussels, Morris
and Grey Pool next weekend.
It was as simple as Clark driving
from Blyth to Brussels one day and
listening to The Tragically Hip on
the radio when he thought to bring
the community together on Aug. 20
for the last show on the band's
current tour.
When the band announced it
would be hitting the road this
summer after the May
announcement that lead singer Gord
Downie has terminal brain cancer,
the CBC quickly teamed up with the
band to live -stream the Kingston
show, the final stop on the tour, to
Canadians.
Clark will be projecting the show
on the wall of the Brussels, Morris
and Grey Community Centre on a
large screen with a high-tech sound
system, to give those in attendance
the feeling of being at the show.
The event will be by donation only
and all proceeds will go towards
repairing the village's pool.
The Hip's music, Clark says, has
touched many Canadians and
holding a fundraising event in a rural
community for a local recreation
location is something he feels fits
with how the Hip has
lived their lives and what
they've meant to Canadians over the
years.
The concert is scheduled to begin
at 8:30 p.m., but the doors to the
event will open just about an hour
beforehand. Clark says that while
details are still being finalized,

Market doing well despite heat
A NOTE FROM BETTY

August has landed and so far it's
just as much fun as July. Swimming
lessons started, soccer and ball are
winding down and vacation times
are continuing at cottages,
campgrounds or grandparents'
places — oh yes, the fun of summer
continues.
The market has had some very
good days, even with the very high
temperatures. Food and flowers are
just the right mix to get people out
and about. Gift ideas are always
available and the weekly draw with
items from each vendor has proved
popular. Bi -weekly 50/50 draws
with Mel McCutcheon on sales have
offered cash to the winner of over
$90 with the market board using its
share to keep things going. Don
Chesher has the music folk
organized with a variety of groups,
each talented and a treat to listen to
as you shop.
The good work of the
Horticultural Society is blooming
nicely. The boxes along Turnberry
Street are showy and the new
benches and large black pots at the
old entrance of the library are a real
asset. So good work folks, you make
us proud of our village.
Oshkosh is a name that goes with
Armstrong around here, not kids'
overalls. For the last 50 or so years
Jim and Leona and various children
at various times made the yearly trek
to Wisconsin to meet with friends
who enjoy aircraft. Home built
planes — the planes, the builders, the
dreamers and the fun made this a
yearly summer project for
Armstrongs to get there and back.
Volunteer duties were part of the
fun as the event grew. Of course the
Armstrong family did their bit. This
year, a volunteer award was given to
Jim and Leona and family for their
time, support, interest and effort
over the years. They were saluted
by their peers for helping
to make the Oshkosh event such a

great place to visit. Well done
Flyboy.
Be sure to come to the Brussels,
Morris and Grey Community Centre
on Aug. 20, if the Tragically Hip are
part of your life. The pool in
Brussels will be supported by this
evening when CBC and The
Tragically Hip offer a live stream
from Kingston, their last concert.
Right now an air-conditioned place
with friends is a good reason to go.
So come support the pool and our
kids and be part of this historical
event. Admission is by donation;
large donations to the pool will be
receipted.
The North Huron Food Share was

Kids Corner — over $200 was shared
helping the kids see community.

At the Branch
Jacklin tops nationals
By Jo -Ann McDonald
It was a busy weekend last week
for members of the Brussels Legion
Branch. The fish fry crew was in
Mitchell to do a fish fry for the
Mitchell's Lions Club. They cooked
for 330 hungry folks and all worked
well. Working for the Branch were
Deb Ross, Lisa Glanville, Joan
Smith, Greg Wilson, Sandra Josling,
Mabel Glanville, Rick and Jo -Ann
McDonald and Judy Lee. The crew
cleaned up and travelled the next day
to Blyth to cook for the Blyth
Legion and the Blyth Festival's
Bonanza weekend. A smaller crowd
of 155 people was fed by members
Deb Ross, Mabel Glanville and Judy
Lee again along with Jim Brown and
Deb Cann.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had a good crowd with 14 tables of
players. Winners were: first, tied, Jo-
Ann and Judy and John and Cathy,
78; third, George and Deanna
Bacon, 74; low, Norm and Grace,
45; lone hands, Louise and Mary,
six. The euchre crew is still looking
for some extra help to take turns
helping out. It is only for a few hours
on Saturday afternoon once in
awhile. Contact Glenn Bridge if you
could help out maybe once every
eight weeks.
We send congratulations and
birthday wishes to Comrade Marg
Bennett who celebrated her 90th
birthday last week. Many of her
family, friends and Comrades of the
Branch dropped in to wish her best
wishes and enjoy a piece of cake at
the Seaforth Hospital conference
room last Sunday afternoon. Happy
birthday and get well soon!
Congratulations to Ryan Jacklin
on an outstanding performance at
the Royal Canadian Legion National
Track and Field competition held in
Sainte -Therese, Quebec. Ryan set a
new provincial record in the javelin
in the under -15 category and is
awaiting confirmation of the title.
He placed sixth in the shot-put
beating his own personal best by 5.7
metres. Ryan missed the finals in the
discus by a mere 25 centimetres and
finished ninth.
Ryan received a medal for
participating in his first national
meet and received a bronze national
medal. Congratulations Ryan!
