Huron East says no to sharing drainage supt. services Huron East has said thanks, but no thanks in regards to sharing the services of a drainage superintendent with North Huron and Morris-Turnberry — at least for the time being. In a letter from Nancy Michie and Sharon Chambers of Morris- Turnberry and North Huron respectively, the two municipalities inquire about potentially sharing services with Huron East. The letter states that in the two municipalities, drainage is handled through the public works department and the workload is becoming too heavy. In Huron East, Chief Administrative Officer Brad Knight told councillors at their July 19 meeting that the municipality's drainage needs are also handled by the public works department. Ten years ago, Knight said, Joe Ryan took on the job as the municipality's drainage super- intendent. Since then, he's been made a foreman in the department and the workload has increased. Knight also suggested that Huron East's costs for drainage are very low compared to some of the figures that were being discussed. Annual costs for drainage in Huron East are $6,000, half of which is covered by a government grant. Compare that, Knight said, to the $138,000 in drainage work that was done in Huron East last year and the municipality is getting off cheap. In recent years, as Ryan's workload has increased due to his promotion to foreman, the workload has been tough at times, Knight said, but much of the work has been able to be back-filled at the office. Councillor David Blaney, among others, suggested that Huron East shouldn't completely shut itself off from the potential sharing of drainage superintendent services with Morris-Turnberry and North Huron, but just respond by saying that the status quo in Huron East is working fine right now. Councillors agreed and correspondence will be sent to the municipalities asking that Huron East be kept in the loop in regards to future decisions regarding the position.
