Jacklin heading for nationals
Big win
Ryan Jacklin brought home several accolades from the
Royal Canadian Legion provincial track and field meet
earlier this month. His work with the Saugeen Track and
Field Club has earned him the chance to compete at the
national championships in Sainte -Therese, Quebec which
will run Aug. 5-7. (Photo submitted)
F.E. Madill School student Ryan
Jacklin made a splash at the
Athletics Ontario Provincial meet in
Windsor earlier this month and will
now be heading to Sainte -Therese,
Quebec for the Royal Canadian
Legion national competition.
"It felt really good to win," Jacklin
said. "I didn't do a bunch of work
beforehand, but now that I know I'm
going on, I'm going to work harder."
The national meet, which runs
Aug. 4-6, will see competitors from
across the country try to be the best
in their classes and 14 -year-old
Jacklin, who is a younger participant
in his 15 and under class, said he
feels a bit nervous.
"It feels pretty good to be going,"
he said. "I am one of the under-
agers, though, so it could be a
challenge."
Jacklin started training in April for
shot-put, javelin and discus, in
which he set personal bests and
earned a gold and silver medal in
javelin and discus respectively. He
would have started earlier, but a
broken collarbone kept him from
honing his skills.
"I've joined the Saugeen Track
Club in Port Elgin now and I'm
training every Tuesday and
Thursday," he said. "That's on top of
going to after-school track and field
meets after my collarbone healed."
Jacklin said he was happy to earn
the achievements he did, but said he
was just aiming for personal bests
when he competed at the Royal
Canadian Legion District C
championships in Kincardine earlier
this year and the provincials at
Timmins earlier this month.
"I was very happy that I got to
place that high, but I was just aiming
to do my best," he said.
Jacklin initially got involved with
the program when one of his school
coaches asked him to sign up for the
meet in Kincardine.
"I didn't know what it was," he
said. "I just knew that I was going to
be competing."
Soon Jacklin was throwing in
Kincardine and the next thing he
knew he was heading to Timmins for
the Royal Canadian Legion
Provincials, where he earned several
accolades.

Campbell aiming higher for
spot in national championship
Mason Campbell has his eyes set
on the Royal Canadian Legion's
National Track and Field
Championship and the former Blyth
resident is a mere five centimetres
away from it.
Most athletes that attend the event
are chosen as part of a provincial
team, however some can attend as
part of the open category at the
event, which will be held in Sainte -
Therese, Quebec Aug. 5-7.
Campbell hopes to be on his way
to Quebec a week from now to
compete in the high jump, however,
that depends on his performance
prior to the event. His personal best
in competition, 180 centimetres, is a
mere five centimetres off the 185 -
centimetre national standard he
needs to hit to be considered for the
event.
When he found out he wasn't
going as part of the provincial team
after the provincial championships
in Timmins earlier this month, he
started training hard to make up the
difference.
"Timmins went pretty well," he
said. "I scored my personal best, but
I had to keep going."
Since then, Campbell has been
focusing on his thrice -weekly
training and hoping he can hit the
mark in any upcoming meets to
make the cut.
"I've been training every Monday,
Wednesday and Saturday," he said.
"Monday is jumping, Wednesday is
strength and conditioning and
Saturday is jumping. I usually train
two hours every day at London
Western club."
Campbell, a Central Huron
Secondary School student entering
Grade 11, has been involved in track
and field since he was in Grade 9.
While at a Western Ontario
Secondary School Athletic
Association (WOSSAA) event, he
was approached by a coach with a
university track team and told he
needed to get into a track and field
club if he wanted to pursue a future
in the competitions.
"A track club is the equivalent of a
hockey team," he said. "So we
looked around, and I ended up in
London Western"
Campbell says that anyone, even
those in elementary school,
interested in pursuing track and field
competitively should sign up with a
club as soon as possible.
"If you're competing, or going to
any meets in elementary school or
high school, you should join a track
club," he said. "I know kids I jump
with now who have been at a club
since they were eight years old. It's a
great way to get going."
