Walton welcomes 70 children to sports camp
Good to go
After months of work, the Goderich-to-Guelph Rail Trail, which runs through Walton, is ready
for cyclists and hikers alike. The trail played a crucial role in last week's Walton Raceway
Sports Camp. Here, raceway founder and trail advocate Chris Lee prepares some of the
camp's children for biking on the trail. From left: Myles Phillips, Nic Hayter, Karsyn Mclnally,

Welcome to summer! It certainly
has been hot, but that is what
summer is all about. Folks having to
work heavy manual labour, in hot
barns or out in the sun, for hours, be
sure to keep well hydrated. Children
are enjoying playing outside and
going to the pool for a refreshing dip
and others are staying inside to enjoy
air conditioning. Remember in
January when we wanted it to be
warmer! Summer flies by and it is
only 22 weeks until Christmas!
The very dry hot weather has
everything dried out and easy to
catch fire. Farmers are having to be
extra careful and watchful in the dry
wheat fields. Machinery and or
vehicles can be very hot underneath
and be the cause of fires. Be careful
everyone, as there have been a few
wheat field fires already. The small
shower of rain Sunday evening did
not alleviate the dryness, just made
things moist for a moment.
We are pleased to hear that Marg
Bennett is in Seaforth Hospital and
is improving slowly. We hope she
will soon be able to be home.
A long road ahead for recovery is
Julie Harrison, who has suffered a
fall and has a broken elbow. I don't
know much about broken elbows,
but I can imagine it will be a long
time to return to normal. We wish
her well in her recovery.
We are glad to see Lloyd Glanville
is home again and we hope he
continues to improve.
Congratulations to Pauline
Gulutzen and her new husband Dave
Tompkins. They were married last
week and had a family party at the
Belgrave Community Centre on
Sunday. They were surrounded by
her family to wish them well.
Walton was on the map again this
past week with the Walton Raceway
Sports Camp for kids. There were 70
children attending the camp that
promotes teamwork, self confidence
and sportsmanship. The children
were aged between six and 13 from
all across Huron County and they
took part in motocross, BMX,
canoeing and kayaking with
Timber's Outfitters, conservation
and birdhouse building with Erin
Dolmage at Maitland Valley
Conservation Area, CrossFit with
Degree CrossFit Kids, fishing at Joe
and Terry Dwyer's farm, bicycling
on the Goderich-to-Guelph Rail
Trail and climbing the high ropes
challenge course.
This is the fourth year for this
camp and it has involved many
different adventures for the kids
every year. It is a day camp for the
five days with an achievement
ceremony at the end of the week.
Returning from a great two-week
holiday to the east coast are Paul and
Cheryl Ryan and friends Ken and
Leanne McNeil. They travelled on
their motorbikes and went via
Ontario and then the States. They
travelled to Gananoque to cross into
New York State and then went to
Lake Placid. They headed on to
Bangor, Maine and then into New
Brunswick.
They rode through New
Brunswick into Nova Scotia and
stopped to see many things
including Pier 21. It was on to the
Cabot Trail of Cape Breton Island
and they took the six -hour, 100 -mile
ferry boat ride from North Sydney to
Channel — Port Aux Basques,
Newfoundland. Although it was cool
and damp much of the time, the
scenery was beautiful to see. They
report not seeing any moose while in
Newfoundland, but considering they
were on motorcycles, that was
maybe not a bad thing.
Paul and Ken went cod fishing for

a day and caught their limit of five
each. The water was rough with 25-
30 -foot swells and in an area of
about 200 -foot deep water. Sea
sickness was not a pleasant part of
the fishing experience. They enjoyed
fresh cod for their supper that
evening.
Another area of interest was a
section of road called "Wreck
House" road. The area has such
strong winds that it actually has
blown a train off the tracks and
tractor trailer units have overturned.
There are days when the winds are
so strong, traffic is limited and trailer
units convoy side by side, with the
heaviest unit positioned to help keep
the lighter rigs from blowing over.
Waiting for winds to subside is not
an option, because it could be days
before that would happen. They
thoroughly enjoyed their holiday
and the interesting areas of the East.
Welcome home!
Four generations of the Shortreed
family gathered at the home of
Emma Shortreed and Brian Black to
celebrate their annual reunion. The
group gathered in Bayfield to enjoy
a potluck meal in the early afternoon
and lovely afternoon of visiting.
There were approximately 50 people
enjoying the day who travelled from
Toronto, Blyth, Exeter, Atwood,
Walton and Belgrave area.
It was birthday party time for
George Townsend as he celebrates a
milestone birthday of 70 years
young! He celebrated with family on
Friday and then with friends on
Sunday at his home. Graeme and
Helen Craig were part of the dozen
friends gathered to enjoy the
afternoon of fun and barbecue
dinner. Happy birthday George!
Karin McDonald is here from
Calgary for a two week holiday. She
attended the McGavin 80th
anniversary gathering, the SS#11
school gathering in Walton, the
Stevens family reunion in Bayfield,
has been to the Blyth Festival with
friends and went to a Blue Jays ball
game with nieces LeeAnn and Kelly,
in the first week of her visit.
