Local athletes
compete at
Legion meet
Several local athletes found
success through the Royal
Canadian Legion Track and Field
provincial competition held in
Timmins last week.
Ryan Jacklin, Mason Campbell
and Abby Bos competed at the
provincial event after placing at the
District track and field competition
in Kincardine earlier this year.
"We have some very talented
young athletes around here,"
District Track and Field co-
ordinator and Blyth Legion Branch
member Crystal Taylor said. "They
did very well."
Taylor explained that the trio
competed against 200 other athletes
at the district competition to be
picked for a team of 40 that would
represent this district, which
stretches from St. Marys to
Goderich and from Tobermory to
Meaford and Guelph.
"There were 427 students at the
provincial meet, and they were
competing to be one of 40 chosen to
attend the national event which will
be held in Quebec," she said.
Jacklin will be going to the
nationals, however he will be
attending as part of the "open" class
and not affiliated with a team. He
received a gold medal in javelin as
well as two personal bests in shot-
put and discus.
Campbell competed in the high
jump and Bos competed in the 300 -
and 800 -metre races, though she
was competing against some much
older athletes.
"At the district meet, I beat the
record and was faster than the 15 -
year -old racers, so I was moved up
to the 15 -and -under group from the
13 -and -under group," she said. "It
makes me nervous competing
against older athletes, but I just
tried my hardest."
Bos, a Hullett Central Public
School student, finished 12th in the
300 -metre race and 1 lth in the 800 -
metre race and hopes to continue
competing.

Blyth youth soccer
tournament cancelled
After eight successful years, the
U7/U8 soccer tournament that was
set to be held in Blyth on July 23 is
being cancelled due to low
registrations.
"This is really disappointing, but,
with only two teams from Wingham
signed up for the tournament, we
had no choice but to cancel the
tournament," organizer David
Sparling said. "It's not that players
are going to another tournament
somewhere, they're simply not
having a year-end event anywhere."
The tournament has been held the
same weekend in July every year
and, for the previous two years, has
been operated in conjuction and
coordination with Blyth's Streetfest.
At its peak, the tournament
welcomed more than 120 players to
Blyth for the half-day event.
Sparling reported that plans are
currently underway for the 2017
tournament and said he hopes for a
stronger turnout.
Royals drop two in
county fastball action
Eight contests kept the action in
the Huron County Fastball League
going over the past week.
On July 17, the Fullarton A's
topped the Mitchell Jr. Mets 13-5 in
Fullarton while the Sebringville Jr.
Sting bested the home field
Wroxeter Royals 15-0 for the
Royals' second loss of the week.
On July 15, Goderich visited
Wroxeter and bested the Royals 14-
6.
The Brussels Tigers welcomed the
Milverton AW Millwrights on July
15 and handed the visiting squad a
punishing 8-1 loss while Fullarton
visited Belmore and bested the
hometown Stingers 10-3.
July 12 saw three games as the
Tavistock Athletics bested Mitchell
9-1 on the Athletics' home field, the
Walton Brewers edged by Goderich
6-5 thanks to the home field
advantage and the Wingham Hitmen
just got by visiting Belmore 6-5.
