McNeil's car, sign restored, set on top of garage A landmark Don McNeil's old shop, on the west edge of Brussels, used to have one of the most unique signs in the community in the form of a 1926 Ford Model T that McNeil restored. The sign served as a landmark for the community and even a Christmas card photo from the shop one year before it had to be taken down. Since then, McNeil has worked on restoring it and recently had it installed at his current shop at the north end of the village. (Shawn Loughlin photo) By Shawn Loughlin The Citizen Earlier this summer, a well-known Brussels landmark was relocated to the north end of town, taking its rightful place alongside plenty of other village artifacts. Those driving past Don McNeil's shop and museum in the north end of Brussels in the last month or two may have a 1926 Ford Model T, high atop the building that holds so many items important to the history of Brussels and beyond. July means fun, isflying by A NOTE FROM BETTY By Betty Graber Watson Call 887-9231 Wow, July is more than half over as I write this. As the saying goes, we must be having a good time for the time is sure a -flying. Ball games and soccer, swimming and playing all make time move right along, so another reason to enjoy each moment. We spent a fast week at Earl Rowe Provincial Park near Alliston this past week. Good weather, grandkids on the loose and all the fun things a campsite brings made for a very good week. Whenever we worry about the next generation and their future (using our criteria for success of course), let me assure you that water, marshmallows and fire are still very high on the required skills for life. So thanks Robyn, Ella and Sloan for sharing your views on life. July is heaven for those who appreciate gardens. Walks and drives in many areas offer the rainbow, in flower and shrub colours. Solid walls, splashes or sprays of colour are there for your viewing enjoyment. Flower names do not matter, as only the display is under consideration. Enjoy! I knew when we moved, we were in the country, but really it wasn't that far from Brussels. So when two wild turkeys came strolling into the neighbourhood Sunday afternoon, it did give me pause. Checking us out for bugs, I guess. Kids Corner 2016 will be nearly over by the time you read this, so I hope you remembered to get your school-age friends there. The story of the vehicle goes back to the early 1970s, when McNeil worked with a group that ran a car show and flea market at the old At the Branch Brussels Fairgrounds (near where the Brussels Optimist Clubhouse is now). "We would bring hundreds of old cars into Brussels and people would stay for this three-day event," McNeil said. A meeting was held on Tuesday evening with a member of the Mitchell Legion Branch concerning the work required to have a food booth at the International Plowing Match to be held at Walton. Mike had a lot of useful facts for us to ponder and the information will be passed on at the next meeting of the Executive. The Saturday afternoon euchre had a good crowd with 14 tables of players. Winners were: first, George and Deanna Bacon, 78; second, Norm and Grace, 77; third, Joann MacDonald and Dorothy Carter, 76; low score, John and Iola Subject, 41 and low hand, Emma and Marilyn. The Sunday night dance had over 75 people enjoying the good music of the Country Versatiles. It was a nice night and a great evening of dancing. There is no dance this week as the Lion's Fiddle Jamboree is on. We hope Comrade Lloyd Glanville is home from hospital soon and is feeling better. Saturday was the celebration of the marriage of Marguerite Oberle Thomas and Bob Kellington. The couple held a reception at the Branch following their nuptials. Congratulations to the newlyweds. It is the fastball tournament at the park this weekend and the Legion will be there. Drop into the Branch and see if there is a time that you could help out.
