Fire claims Londesborough barn
Board may A blaze
discontinue
By Denny Scott
The Citizen
The future of the Blyth Arena
Board is in question according to
member and North Huron
Councillor Brock Vodden.
At council's July 4 meeting, the
board was discussed regarding a
pending use of the "Leaf account"
The fund, which was created
when donations are made to the
Blyth Community Centre, received
its name due to the leaves that bear
the name of donors.
The arena board decided that two
more 15 amp hydro boxes on the
campground should be replaced
after several were replaced in the
past. The two new boxes, which
contain 20 amp breakers, will
cost approximately $800 each to
install.
North Huron Council has to
approve the funds being moved
from the reserve account before
they can be spent.
As part of the discussion about
the validity of the project, in which
council approved the board's
request, Vodden explained that the
board is looking at dissolution.
"Without going into a great deal
of detail, that committee is re-
examining its modality and
purpose," he said. "Part of the
reason for the committee is to get
feedback from user groups... but the
group only meets three times a year
so user groups go to [staff] with
their issues."
Vodden said the group is in the
process of closing down and
coming up with another approach to
deal with the leaf account.
A barn, as well as the livestock inside, on Londesborough Road was claimed by fire on June
29. The Fire Department of North Huron and the Central Huron Fire Department were on -
scene to battle the blaze, however the fight was complicated by electricity arcing across the
steel in the structure. One firefighter from North Huron was treated for heat stress at Clinton
Hospital as a result of the blaze but was released later in the day. (Denny Scott photos)
On Wednesday, June 29, a barn
reportedly owned by Bert and Linda
Renkema on Londesborough Road
was lost in a fire.
The barn, which housed seven
cattle that perished in the blaze,
was gutted by fire and the
roof had collapsed shortly after
local firefighters arrived on
scene.
Firefighters from both the North
Huron Fire Department's (FDNH)
Blyth and Wingham halls as well as
a tanker from the Central Huron Fire
Department were called to the scene
at 2:30 p.m. and went about putting
out the fire, however, electricity was
still active in the structure
which stymied the efforts of the
crew.
According to FDNH Deputy -
Chief Matt Townsend, electricity
was arcing on the metal siding of the
barn, which made fighting the fire
more difficult until Hydro One
crews were able to disconnect the
power to the barn.
"With the roof collapsed and
electrical wiring issues, our hands
were somewhat tied until other
resources came to assist us with this
fire," Townsend reported.
The damage is estimated at less
than $150,000 according to the
FDNH. The cause of the fire is
unknown and will likely remain as
such due to the significant damage
to the structure, however it is not
being treating as suspicious.
Firefighters were on scene until 6
p.m.
One firefighter was taken to
Clinton Public Hospital due to
heat stress and was released
later that day.

A big help
The Sunshine Foundation of Canada received a big boost from the Brussels Optimist Club as
a result of the club's annual spring dinner and auction fundraiser. The club donated $10,000
to the organization which helps children with severe physical disabilities realize their dreams,
some of which include meeting celebrities or swimming in the ocean. From left: President Vern

brought up wasn't just in his opinion.
"If we're talking about this event,
we should be talking about every

fine. [This isn't] fair to Streetfest

Staff and council agreed that a
document outlining what the
township would provide for such
events is something to be worked on
in the future before both the road
closure request and the assistance
from township staff were approved.
Campbell requested, however, that
staff keep track of the time spent on
the event so it could be discussed a
later date.
