Hullett's Scrimgeour looks back through the years
By Claire Scrimgeour
Well, I can't believe it. Here we
are tonight, our last time together as
the Grade 8 class of 2016. Some of
you have been with me since
kindergarten, some of you joined
Hullett four years ago, and some
have been here for only this year.
But in the end, it doesn't really
matter, because tonight we are a
class who made it through
elementary school and are on our
way to the next stage in our lives,
high school. Tonight, we should
embrace this time to look back at all
the amazing things we have done as
a class, and as individuals.
I am so excited to be able to share
our speech with you. I say our
speech because it's our story, I was
just the one honoured to put it into
words.
It hasn't always been clear sailing
for us. There have been murky
waters and high waves, but also
waters as smooth as liquid glass. Our
teachers have been the sunny,
cloudless skies to keep our waters
crystal clear and smooth, and to keep
our boats from sinking, or getting
lost.
Mrs. Gerber, you have done
amazing things with this class. Not
only have you prepared us for high
school, but you have also taught us
to be independent and confident. I
know that now we are as ready as we
will ever be to go to high school,
because of you and your caring
personality. You have made many of
us realize who we were this year,
and to not be afraid to express how
we felt. We are all now comfortable
around each other and you, due to
your friendly attitude you take with
you no matter where our class is. We
will never forget your incredibly
loud sneezes, heartwarming laugh or
how you weren't afraid to speak
your mind and help us speak ours.
Each teacher at Hullett has played
an important role in getting us to
where we all are today. We had Mr.
Coups, who taught us to own up to
our mistakes and be mature. You
helped us realize that being
dishonest gets you nowhere and that
being mature takes a tremendous
amount of responsibility and hard
work. We had Mrs. Barnett who was
a teacher to some when they were
younger, but also was our music
teacher that wouldn't take mischief
from anyone. You have taught us that
you need to be willing to sacrifice
and take chances in order to succeed.
Mrs. and Mr. Bosman, you two have
always been nice and
generous to everyone throughout
the school, and have taught us that
kindness goes a long way. Mrs.
Goetz, you are the best thing that
could have happened to Hullett. You
have been caring and fair with every
single student in this school. We all
thank you for being the best
principal you can be, every day.
There have been friendships, and
even relationships in our class, some
with more relationships than others,
but in the end, we all still treat each
other the same, like a family away
from home. Everyone in this class is
their own person. We all have the
ability to make our own decisions
with who we hang out with, and
what we do. In high school, we will
be faced with a challenge. There will
be two options, failing or
succeeding. I'm certainly not saying
that failure is a bad thing. Most of
the time it is actually one of the best
things that can happen.
Think of it this way, how boring
would a book be without a problem.
There would be no storyline, no
journey, no excitement. This is
exactly like life. Your life story
wouldn't be worth telling if there
were no lessons to learn. You can do
whatever you want to do in life, but
you have to be willing to run into
bumps in the road. Walt Disney was
fired from a newspaper company
because they said he lacked ideas.
But, now we have the world famous
Disneyland. You really think that if
he gave up after being fired, the park
would have been created? The
failure was a message given to him
that he needed to start dreaming even
bigger and keep going no matter
what.
Over the past few years, I have
learned a tremendous amount from
each one of you. I will never forget
all of our soccer games, where rules
were not applied, our massive
debates over things like if crunchy or
puffy Cheetos were better, or even
the simple things like when we all
made funny mistakes. This year was
so entertaining to see everyone truly
express who they are, just in time for
high school. I know that our class is
extremely close, but I know that all
of you will find amazing friends in
high school that will also help you
thrive in what you aspire to do.
Create new, amazing memories to
cherish, but never let your older ones
fade away. Know that everyone in
this class will always be there for
you, even after graduation.
We have made it through the
amazing parts of the year, and the
not so great times. Mrs. Gerber, I
think the whole class can agree with
me when I say that you are the most
forgiving teacher that we have ever
had. When we broke stools, chairs or
even mugs, you always managed to
realize that we were just kids who
made a few mistakes — well, quite a
few mistakes, and didn't mean to
break your things. Choosing names
from the pug jar was one of your
many great teaching strategies. For
those of you that have no clue what I
am talking about, the pug jar was a
mug filled with popsicle sticks, one
for every student. When we had no
clue what the answer to a question
was, or if we just plainly didn't want
to answer, Mrs. Gerber would yank a
