What a wonderful weekend for
Canada Day celebrations! A little bit
of rain early Friday and then only
improvement from then on. We
celebrated Canada Day by going to
the Hamilton Tiger Cats game with
some of our family. Rick and I were
joined by daughter LeeAnn and
Craig and Rick's brother Neil. The
roads were certainly busy with
people heading to campsites across
the area, while some folks just
stayed at home. Firework displays
started on Thursday evening and
continued throughout the weekend.
We could see some beautiful
displays in almost every direction as
we left the city of Hamilton. Happy
birthday Canada!

to attend and to host the Stevens

One cool donation
The Brussels Optimist Club wants to help make sure that everyone has access to the food
they need to survive in Huron County and made a donation to the North Huron Community
Food Share to make that goal more attainable. The club donated $2,000 which will go towards
a walk-in freezer for the food share which will greatly enhance the frozen foods the
organization can store and offer. The freezer installation will happen soon as the organization
continues to raise money for the project. From left: Optimist Mike Thomas, Food Share
representative Alicia Deitner and Optimist President Vern Logan. (DennyScottphoto)

family reunion at his home. No
doubt he will be tired out before he
heads back to Vancouver.
Enjoying a few days away on the
bikes were Gerry and Anne Ryan
and Don and Pat Dalton. They were
out to see the beautiful waterfalls of
our northern area. They met with
friends from the Forest area to do the
tour. They were in the Horseshoe
Valley area where they saw Walters
Falls, Eugenie Falls, Inglis Falls and
Hogg Falls They were away three
days and enjoyed nice hot weather.
Congratulations to Renze and
Klasina VanderPloeg on celebrating
their 25th wedding anniversary on
Saturday evening. The party was
held at their home with about 100
friends and guests to enjoy the
evening.
We are pleased to hear that Jean
Bridge is now back to Seaforth
Hospital and working on her rehab.
We hope she is soon well enough to
be home again.
Only two weeks to go before the
big S.S. #11 school reunion. A final
meeting to confirm preparations was
held last week and the group is
hoping for well over 50 to attend.
There are still a few folks they have
not been able to find, so any former
school chums you know, pass on the
message to come to the party. They
can contact Graeme Craig, Janet
Webster, Linda Gingerich or Wenda
Humphries.
A birthday gathering was held for
the family and a few friends of Lorne
Glanville on Sunday afternoon at the
home of son, Robert and Jackie
Glanville. They gathered to celebrate
Lorne's 70th birthday. Beside the
immediate family members, Don
FROM WALTON
and Pat Dalton and Clyde and Cathy
McClure attended.
Celebrating the first of July
birthdays include Linkin McCallum,
Julie Wharton and Colton Van Driel.
Birthdays continue with Dianne
Baan, Sherry Taylor, Craig Baan,
Merton Hackwell, Jeffrey Linton,
Ken Pethick, Michael Ryan, Hope
Williamson, Burt Lobb, Jonathon
Blake, Allison Stevenson, Ralph
Bos, Dianne Blake, Lorne Glanville
and Brad Knight.
Happy birthday to all!

Citizen availability in case of a postal strike
Following a breakdown between
Canada Post and the Canadian
Union of Postal Workers (CUPW),
the union is in a position to take
some sort of job action beginning
soon which could disrupt delivery
of your copy of The Citizen. Because
we don't know when or how this
action might take place it's difficult
to make alternative plans for
delivery of your paper.
During the last postal disruption
in 2011 CUPW began rotating strikes
but Canada Post soon decided to
lock out union members. Many local
post offices such as Blyth, Brussels
and the smaller hamlets are not
operated by CUPW personnel but
Canada Post refused in 2011 to let
them accept and deliver local mail
such as The Citizen.
We don't know what rules will be
imposed at local Canada Post offices
in the event of a strike this time.
If there is a complete shutdown of
the system we will attempt to find
alternative ways of getting The
Citizen as close as possible to your
home. Until we know what the
situation is, however, the one thing
we can promise is that if all else fails
you can pick up your copy at our
Blyth of Brussels offices, depending
were you live.
