Stratford's Wendy Orr to open Festival Gallery season

Gallery's 2016 season with her exhibit entitled "Quiet Time"

Kids in the Kitchen
returns to Blyth UG
Summer is just around the corner,
and so is the "Kids in the Kitchen"
travelling summer day camp.
Across Huron County, six United
Churches will host the program,
which teaches children ages eight to
12 basic cooking skills through a
morning of preparing fun -filled,
healthy recipes. But there's more to
this week-long program than just
cooking and eating: thoughtful
discussions about where our food
comes from, what is really "healthy"
food, games, stories and more are all
components of the daily routine.
The last day will feature a Master
Chef cooking challenge for all
participants, which will be shared
with the parents over lunch. Last
year's challenge asked teams to
make "the ultimate cupcake" with
whatever wacky ingredients they
were provided.
Additionally, the travelling day
camp is once again offering another
program for older youth, ages 10 to
15, called "Master Chef." More
advanced cooking skills will be
introduced and the themes and
discussions will focus on cultural
cuisines from around the world. The
program will be hosted in the
afternoons at three church sites -
Blyth United Church, Brucefield
United Church and Lakeshore
United Church, Goderich.
Each church suggests a donation
for these half-day programs to help
cover grocery costs. Registration is
advised and participants are
encouraged to contact the church
nearest them to attend.
Kids in the Kitchen and Master
Chef Travelling Summer Day
Camps will run in the following
churches: July 11-15, Blyth United
Church; July 18-22, Huron Shores
United, Grand Bend; July 25-29,
Clinton United Church; Aug. 8-12,
Brucefield Community United
Church; Aug. 15-19, Egmondville
United Church and Aug. 22-26,
Lakeshore United Church,
Goderich.

Beginning June 17, the Blyth
Festival Art Gallery will be
presenting the first of its three
professional -level exhibitions,
featuring the paintings of Stratford's
Wendy Orr.
Her formal art education began at
the secondary school level in
Woodstock, Ontario. From 1975 to
1978 she attended Sheridan College
of Applied Arts and Technology,
completing the three-year
Illustration program. She spent
several years working as an
illustrator, then renrolled in the
University of Western Ontario to
study Visual Arts and became a
certified teacher through the Faculty
of Education.
From 1986 to 2012 she taught
visual arts at a secondary school in
Stratford. She continues to reside in
Stratford where she now works full
time as a visual artist.
Asked about the title of the show,
Wendy replied, "Six months into the
preparation of my show, my mother
was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
My focus became divided and
during this time, the original
motivation for my work changed
from external to internal inspiration.
This shift became evident in the
process. Painting became my form
of meditation, a quest for peace and
calm in a family crisis. As a result,
the work in this show became much
more personal, a record of quiet
moments frozen in time."
The subjects of her paintings vary
from rural landscapes to forest
scenes. There are birds and beasts,
flowers and trees. All are painted
with close attention to detail and a
vibrant use of colour and light, an
homage to the style of some of her
favourite artists, Vermeer,
Caravaggio, and the more contem-
porary work of Alex Colville, David
Blackwood and Mary Pratt. It is
obvious that she has a real devotion
to her immediate surroundings.
The public can view Wendy Orr's
exploration of what "Quiet Time"
means to her in the Bainton gallery,
Blyth Memorial Hall, from June 17
to July 9. Her exhibition of paintings
is presented by the Blyth Festival Art
Gallery. It is curated by Lauren
Marshall and sponsored by Lynda
and Duncan McGregor and Ron
and Bev Walker. The gallery is
located next to the Blyth
Festival box office and is open
during box office hours.
Admission is free.

gallery, visit blythfestival.com.
