Food on the brain
The Brussels Recreation Committee held its Paint the Pail
event on Saturday and welcomed young people to put their
artistic flair to work decorating garbage bins that will be at
local recreation sites. Shown posing with their ice -cream -
sandwich -themed pail are Hudson Marshall, left, and Sam
Overholt. (Denny Scott photo)

The Majestic Women's Institute
met in the community room at the
Brussels Library on June 8.
President Yvonne Knight opened the
meeting with a reading entitled,
"Why Parents have Grey Hair",
followed by the singing of the
Institute Ode and repeating the Mary
Stewart Collect.
Janet Haertel was the convenor of
the Alzheimer's awareness meeting.
She introduced Danielle VanWyk
who is a family support counsellor
with the Alzheimer Society of Huron
County. Danielle gave an overview
of Alzheimer's disease and related
dementias.
Currently, 500,000 Canadians are
living with Alzheimer's disease or
related dementia. Currently one new
case of dementia is diagnosed every
five minutes. Dementia is not a
disease, but a set of symptoms that
accompany a disease which includes
loss of memory, understanding and
judgment. There are many different
kinds of dementia, but 64 per cent of
all dementia is Alzheimer's disease.
Alzheimer's disease is most
common over age 65 but can occur
at any age.
Janet thanked Danielle for her
most informative presentation.
Secretary Leona Armstrong read the
minutes of the May meeting and the
correspondence. The roll call was
answered by telling where you were
on Sept. 11, 2001. Kathy Bridge
distributed the June newsletter
which included the Treasurer's,
Coins for Friendship and Sunshine
reports.
It was decided to sell tickets for
the group's quilt draw at Foodland
on July 8 and at the market on Aug.
19.
Majestic Women's Institute would
like to sponsor a contestant in the
Ambassador of the Fair competition.
Anyone from the community is most
welcome to come to the community
room at the library from 10 a.m. to
noon on July 5, Aug. 2 and Sept. 6.
Bring your finished craft and enjoy a
time of socializing. Each member
brought a gift wrapped in newspaper
and Kathy Bridge was the
auctioneer. A tasty lunch was
provided by Ruth Bauer and Yvonne
Knight.

WALTON

The bouncy weather of Ontario
has us sweltering one day and
wearing coats the next. Cooler
weather is nicer for working, but
summer weather doesn't last that
long, so we need to enjoy what we
have.
Walton was busy with plenty of
traffic on the weekend with the
Walton Raceway hosting motocross
practice on Saturday and races on
Sunday. The new Amateur
Motocross of Ontario race group
was excited at the magnificent
response with over 570 entries for
the Sunday race. It was a long day
for the work crew but a very
successful day for all.
The Winthrop birthday bunch
gathered at Walton Inn for the June
get-together last week. The group
enjoyed breakfast as usual and
attending were Karen Braecker,
Yolanda Gubelmann, Jennifer
Vellinga and Jeanette Robinson. The
birthday to celebrate was Shawn
Reinink's, June 16, but Shawn had a
better offer to go stay with grandma,
so missed the party with the group.
They can always celebrate with him
next time! Happy birthday to
Shawn!
Joan Smith and Lisa Glanville
hosted the Smith family reunion at
their home on Saturday. They had
over 60 members of the Smith
families attend the potluck meal
and afternoon of fun. It is
always great to see the relatives
that live a little farther away.
John and Karen Braecker and
family had a get-together on Friday
evening to celebrate 365 days until
Adam Braecker and Roxane Murray
get married. The two families met to
enjoy a barbecue and social time and
to get to know one another a bit
better. There is plenty of work ahead
on planning an outdoor wedding.
Congrats and happy planning!
The Walton ball park year is
underway with three teams playing
from the park. The Walton Brewers
have Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. for
their home games and the co-ed
team has Wednesday evenings at 9
p.m for theirs. Thursday evenings at
7 p.m. are the ladies slo-pitch league
games. Contact Jo -Ann or Scott
McDonald for park information.
The time is flying by for the
S.S.#11 School reunion to roll
around. The committee has been
faithfully meeting and trying to
contact as many former students of
the "McGavin" school as they can.
They are very pleased to this date on
the responses of those planning on
attending, but they hope to have
confirmation for all who plan to
attend. It is much easier to arrange
food. You can contact Graeme Craig,
Linda Gingrich or check out
Facebook with Wenda Humphries or
Janet Shortreed. They are hoping for
a good crowd and have plans in
place for a good day for all!
We are sorry to hear that Jean
Bridge is still in hospital. She is now
in Stratford and we hope she is
improving.
Welcome back to Rick and
Margaret Mclnroy and Ed McClure,
who have returned from a trip to the
east coast. They were away about
two -and -a -half weeks and travelled
through sites in Quebec, New
Brunswick, Nova Scotia and P.E.I.
They enjoyed great weather with just
a couple of days of wet weather.

FROM WALTON
Some of the highlights of the trip
were going to Peggy's Cove,
Lunenburg to see the Blue Nose
ship, the rise and fall of the tide at
the Bay of Fundy, seeing the Tidal
Bore, where the tide rushing in
against the river flowing out creates
the Bore, Fort Lewisburg on Cape
Breton Island, and did a boat tour of
the Thousand Islands near Kingston.
They toured Old Quebec City on the
city tour bus, did a boat tour to see
the highest waterfall in Canada and
had just an incredible trip. They
stayed at bed and breakfasts and
hotels for two or three days before
moving onto their next area. A
wonderful trip but always nice to get
home.
Celebrating birthdays this past
week includes Sandra Lewington,
Laura Bowers, Joan McNaughton,
Matthew McKee, Emily Wilts,
Kaden Huether, Kolton McNeill,
Sullivan Smith, Hillary Bachert,
Dallas Young, Tanner Boven, Shawn
Reinink and Colleen Smith. Happy
birthday to all!

so much to improve their community.
Now you have a chance to say thanks.
Nominate that special person for the 31st

Each year a committee chooses an outstanding citizen from each of the Blyth and area
